Eliminate water filter?

Here's a question:
what do you all think about removing and eliminating the filter cartridge from the housing, and just water flow thru their freely? I don't have a need to actually filter the water - this won't hurt the system, will it?

We removed ours, patched the plumbing and now use external filter. Sure made winterizing easier, I did not like dealing with thing!

I use an external filter as well but this approach still reduces pressure in the TT. My concern is if you hook up to a water source without any filter and sand comes through with the water the potential of the sand grit damaging something so I would at minimum have a screen in place. Having said this I prefer a filter be in place that includes activated carbon even at the expense of lower pressure.

I ran all year w/o the water filter in (basically because I forgot all about putting it back in after de-winterizing)

No apparent harm done.

Most units have a screen in the hose connector and the water in your tank shouldn't be a problem.

True, mine does, though it's not a very tight mesh so I bet little bits of sand could get through. I'll probably use the filter next season, if for no other reason than it exists.

Ours was a pain in the butt, hard to get to, and took up storage space. I removed it years ago. No problems or issues.

Both of my trailers had a mesh on the city water connection (I also have one in the faucet side of my hoses) that should catch "most" anything that would plug up a line and a much finer sediment filter inline at the suction side of the pump as well to keep that from getting any junk in it from the tank. Worst case scenario is enough little particles could build up in the aerator screens on the faucets over time and start to restrict flow...easy enough to clean them. The only real purpose of the filter / housing is for drinking water (and removing what very little fine particles managed to slip by) kind of like a Britta filter on your house water. If you're like us and just use the faucets for washing, boiling, and brushing teeth, etc., it's not needed at all really. I keep mine in, but 95%+ of consumed water comes from a bottle so a chlorine / sediment filter really doesn't matter to us.

It won't hurt anything to not use it but if you don't and you hook up to water that has sulpher, iron or other minerals they can discolor showers, sinks and fixtures. On top of that the smell of sulfer will need chlorine ran through your lines to get rid of it. Water should be filtered before putting it in your tank also if your at a campground, you can't guarantee that water is clear of contaminates.

Me personally, I feel better having a quality filter. I just have a thing for clean water. If the drawback is a little less pressure, I will live with it. But I am planning to redo mine so that only the cold water to the sinks is filtered.

I removed mine completely and use it as an external filter.(Hard to get to where it was mounted.) I didn't like the idea of having the sump full of water while my TT sits in "non use". As an external, I can empty the sump, remove the filter to dry and have less worry about green stuff growing.

Has any one mentioned the whole filter housing can be removed. Where the fittings are screwed into the housing you can replaced it with a standard 1/2 inch pipe coupling. In our unit you have to crawl in under the bed to get to the filter - didn't take me long to find a solution to remedy that.

Eliminated mine and installed an expansion tank. I use an external in line water filter for silt removal at campgrounds with well water.

I considered doing that last year but rethought the idea. I'm assuming the point is to stop the pump from running every time you open a faucet. After the pressure comes down, wouldn't the pump just run longer once it did come on until the tank pressured back up? Sounds like it would defeat the purpose. Am I missing something here?

It keeps the water pressure constant during showers and I get 2-3 good flushes before the pump runs. Yes, it does run longer then (it has to refill the 2 gallon holding tank); but the flushes in the middle of the night don't wake everyone up like when the pump runs every time for a "tinkle."

Think about this......
How many of us have water filters in our home?
That should answer the question I'd think.

I have two filters here at home, only use one on the trailer.

Don't bother flushing after every tinkle. Flush when everyone is awake. It's only tinkle:-)

Maybe they learned something as my 2013 Surveyor Select 235 came without the filter which was fine by me. I ended up removing the one from my last trailer and plumbed the space in between.

Still debating whether I want to go the external filter route or not.

I removed my filter and use it externally now. With the internal filter and housing removed I have room for a drawer. More storage!
