Not sure if anyone mentioned this or not, but you said the water heater didn't have the electric option. Are you sure? Look outside for a small black switch, that may have a cotter pin through it, that may be the only switch for the electric option.

Once you have a charged 12 volt battery and a good propane tank connected, turn off the water heater for 1 minute and then try again.
You may need to flush the air out of the lines by running the stove top burners for a few minutes. If the burners don't light, turn off the gas bottle; wait a few minutes and SLOWLY crack it to keep the safety device in the gas line "pigtail" from thinking there is a big leak in the hose.
Good Luck.

Yes I'm sure...I spoke with Surburban yesterday and they said the sw10d model is propane only, sw10de has the electric option as well.
Thanks!

Got it herk, thanks.
Off to work now. I'm going to purchase a battery this evening and hopefully get the water heater working. I'll post an update within the next couple of days.

One other thing I would consider is getting a 100# propane tank for longer intervals between tank switches.

My water heater will work without a battery because the onboard
power center is also a 12v battery source.
I just wonder why this one won't work??
If 12v interior lights are working the water heater should also work.
I'm not saying it's not a good idea to have a battery but this -should-
work without one.
Maybe the water heater does not have 12v for other reason(s) that
won't be fixed by adding a battery??
Just some thoughts from a guy who fiddles with this stuff pretty often.....

True...
If the converter is working properly the wh should work without a battery.
As it supplies 12v to charge the battery when in place.

There could also be a bad connection preventing 12 volts from getting to the water heater. MAKE SURE you have 12 volts at the spark control board. Use a troubleshooting light or voltmeter.

A tech from suburban told me the water heater wont work without a 12 volt battery being hooked up. I did check the circuit with a multimeter and was getting 30 AC volts across the switch wires. That has me baffled. I'm curious to know what it will show when a battery is hooked up.
Thanks Dan...

Update:
It's colder than a well diggers....uh, shovel here in Mississippi. The family is currently living with the sons father and mother, brother, a bull mastiff and 3 cats in a motor home. For those keeping count, that's 8 people and 4 pets. We're going to hold off until Thursday or Friday to try to get the water heater functioning.
I'll post an update.
Words can't express how much I appreciate the help!

Update:
I took off 2 hours early from work today to get the water heater working. Showed up with battery and tools in hand just to find out they've decided to replace the toilet. Yep, the waters off and toilet removed, so I can't send power to the water heater since it would ruin the heating element. Sure would have been nice for someone to share that information with me before I took leave from work.
They've also decided to replace some of the flooring since the inlet line on the back of the unit had a leak inside the wall and ruined the floor. So, there's no water connection at this time anyhow.
Hopefully everything will be good in a week or two.
Have a great weekend!
Adam

Another question before I hit the sack. The furnace would not work until I hooked up a propane tank. It would just click on and off a few seconds before it turned off. Is there any way to run the heat off of AC voltage?
|
I didn't see anyone respond to this question. Generally the furnace runs on gas only. There are 110VAC electrical resistance heater systems that you can buy and mount in the hot air discharge plenum of the furnace, but I highly doubt that one is installed on yours. If the trailer has an Air Conditioner, some of them have a heating element built into them. Look at the controls and see if there is a heat setting. If not, your out of luck. If you want electric heat, you need to do what most of us do - buy a 1500 watt space heater. (At campgrounds, we usually pay a flat fee for electric, no matter how much we use, so use of a space heater saves on gas.) If you do get a space heater, you need to take all the normal space heater precautions. Also, if the trailer has a 30 amp system, you probably can't run more than 1 heater, and not too much else (a 1500 watt heater pulls about 12-13 amps). If it's a 50 amp system, you can probably run 2 heaters, but you need to make sure they're on different circuits, as each circuit usually has a 15 amp breaker.

I checked the AC unit, is does not have a heater. I've considered purchasing them space heaters but am reluctant to do so since they have 3 little ones. Guess I need to try and find "child proof" space heaters.
Thanks Rockfordroo...
