First time winterizer - pump won’t pull anti-freeze

Went to RV dealer and bought a winterizing bypass valve. Yesterday drained all fresh water. Put the valve on the supply side and in the bypass position. Turned pump on and opened a valve. A little pumped through and got some out of faucet, but it won’t pull any more. I can see its pulled about an inch up from top level of AF bottle but won’t pull more. Bypassed water heater also. Am I vapor locked?

Make sure the winterizing hose is on tight. You may have to keep a faucet open to maximize suction until it starts and the pump may run for a short time.

If your pump started to pump, and then quit, there's a chance you have an air lock in the plumbing that the pump can not overcome. This throws the pump into by-pass mode. Turn off your pump and go outside to the CW connection. Pull the cap off and locate the little button inside. Stand off to the side and reach your finger in and push the button. If you have an air lock a stream of water and maybe some pink stuff will shoot out. Ensure you release all the pressure. Then try your pump again with antifreeze. The pump should come out of by-pass and start picking up the antifreeze in a matter of seconds. Let us know how you make out

pump won't pull

If I can piggyback this thread, my pump won't pull anything and I wonder; can they lose their prime? I'm winterizing my 2007 Roo 23SS by trying to pull 2 1/2 gal of solution from the fresh water tank through the pump but the pump runs, but no pressure and no pink. I have opened the WH bypass valve, closed the cold water valve, tightened the clamp on the hose at the tank. drained the Water Heater, and even filled the fresh water tank to get a little water in the fresh water hose . I disconnected the hose on the pressure side of the pump at a connection (not at the pump)and could not detect any activity , no flow, no noise. I don't think I used the fresh water all summer and thought maybe all the water in the "tank to pump" hose evaporated and the pump couldn't overcome the 20 inch loop in that connection. I can't reach the connection at the bottom of the tank without a sledge hammer and carpenter.
Could the diaphragms have torn?
Thanks for any insight.

Took the bypass valve apart and reassembled it. Something must have been leaking air. Worked like a champ after that. Thanks for help everyone!

Yes pumps can lose their prime and if you haven't used it in a while it possibly has.
How long did you let it run with a faucet open?
Sometimes it might take a couple minutes.

The easiest way to get the pump to prime is remove the intake line from the pump and pour some water/antifreeze in there using the line or some other line fashioned to the pump. You mentioned it was located at a bad place so best of luck.

Of course you have other issues now.
First, putting antifreeze in the fresh tank isn't recommended for several reasons.
One, sometimes the pick-up port on the tank is on the side of the tank so it might take 5-6 gallons (or more) of antifreeze just to reach the port. Also, it's awfully hard to get the remaining residual antifreeze out of the fresh tank come next spring.

You also mentioned you then filled the fresh tank with water to try to get the pump to run. That has diluted any antifreeze in the tank to being useless as far as winter protection.

Which bypass valve?
The ones at the water heater would have no effect on the pump and you didn't mention having a bypass valve at the pump, especially since you eluded to putting antifreeze in your fresh tank.

If you installed a bypass valve at the pump to ingest antifreeze, why did you put antifreeze in the fresh tank?

I'm sorry, I'm confused as to what you installed and what you did.

I think you’re confusing me (OP) with someone elses comments.

I also owned a 2007 Roo 23SS and NEVER put antifreeze in the FW tank. Doing that is not advised.
You'll have to flush the FW tank numerous times to get rid of the taste.
You should get a kit so you can go straight to the pump.

Thanks for all the replies to my issue and my apologies to the OP for trampling on his post; I saw a common thread.
And I'll be rinsing the water tank all Spring!

Also why only close the cold water valve? Should have closed hot also. He may have antifreeze in his WH when he got the pump going.
