fresh water tank issues

if you have a drain on your fresh water tank with this configuration, you may want to modify for better life. first, you can see the tank support is bowed. this makes for a stressed spin weld at the drain connection for the fitting wants a flat surface to bond to. second, this tank is not the white plastic but the softer grainy grey/black plastic which makes for a less effective weld. third, the larger fittings and drain valve place more leverage on the weld when one operates the valve to drain or close. fourth, the location of the drain itself makes it difficult to operate the valve placing extra stress on the valve weld as well.

patch welded to cover hole of old drain. this is the first Ive seen of these tanks used for fresh water. usually its the white plastic. also, spin weld fittings are not used in the bottom of these tanks either. usually the tops or possibly an end where the surfaces are flat.

re-enforced tank support to prevent convex shape forming on bottom of tank...to prevent breaking spin weld on tank.

teflon paste used to seal fresh water hose to tank fitting. i removed all i found at entrance. this is a blob found further down tank fitting. this is not the best way to seal this fitting. i use 100% silicone to seal. it sets and imparts no odors to water.

not shown: new drain placed in patch area. re-installed tank.

if i had other than the white tank, i would modify to reduce stress on the tank fitting. the tank support bars that bowed also make contact with the lp gas black pipe. im looking to modify there as well...

I've never seen a fresh water tank drain that looks like that. The only ones I've seen are those small dinky white valves that only let out a small amount of water.

I have a drain similar to the one shown, works great, very convenient. however it now leaks. will plug and move to a better location. Can an average joe do this kind of repair?

i did show 2 valves. the second valve would be an easier fix. some are threaded and some barbed but they usually are easy enough to fix and about 5 bucks to purchase.

this one was the worst of the fleet. the 1.5" spin fitting was closest to the corner of the tank where the convex shape of the bottom of the tank was most pronounced. did your 2004 have the white tank? just curious...these units roll almost every weekend in summer, so they do see more use than most privately owned coaches.

Talking fresh water tank

thanks for the reply Crockett, the name on the tank is inca plastics h-607. looking at their website they use polyethylene. haven't scrapped to see if the tank is white, looks gray, black underneath. they used a white spin welded fitting on it. just found a website (tap plastics has a glue that adheres to poly with heat treatment, called poly-weld) going to look into it.) Love the forum, have learned alot.
