When we were on the walk through of our new rig the guy said never have the electric switch on when using propane to heat water. He said using them both at the same time would overheat the hot water tank.
Does not make sense to me. Seems if you are at an RV park using electric power one would not use propane. And of course dry camping one does not have 110 so propane is it.
In past rigs we never gave it any thought and did not have a problem. Am I missing something?

Evidently the guy didn't/doesn't know what he's talking about. Both the electric and the propane have individual high limit switches that work independently of each other to protect the tank. We use both at the same time just to reduce recovery time. Have for over 4 yrs and no problems. Just make sure you have water in the tank before use the electric or you will be buying a new unit. It will burn out in SECONDS. Don't ask how I know.

I don't think your salesperson knew what he was talking about. We always use both gas and electric at the same time as do many others.
I have used both at the same time as well, zero issues with the Atwood.
Was this guy a camper or someone off the street that day?

I do mine a little different, we are almost always in a RV Park somewhere so if you dry camp this won't apply.
We use the electric all the time and only use the propane when we need quick recovery like when we both need to take a shower. I hope I save a couple of bucks a year on propane.

We do mostly use the electric and only the propane as suggested to heat the water quickly.
RV parks are our most often target. My wife, who at one time was a backpacker, now thinks if we don't have full hookup she is rouging it.
I am attempting to talk her into a two night dry camping experiment this coming season. We have one 100 watt solar panel and a small Honda generator so we should not be without lights. All LED so I am optimistic.
And of course propane for hot water.
There seem to be a ton of very nice state and federal campgrounds/parks that do not offer hookups. I think we are missing out by not giving them a chance.
It snowed, again, last night. I am really ready for warm weather.
