Geo Method Results?

Hi All, have just purchased a Rockwood Minilite 2109s. Bought privately, unit is one year old and been used only 3 times. I have been studying the Geo Method of keeping the holding tanks clean. This is where you use water softener and Laundry detergent in you tanks to keep things smooth and prevent solids from sticking to the sides and the sensors. I was just wondering if anyone else has heard of this and if anyone is using this method. If so, how satisfied are you with the results?

It is a widely known and well used method. I switched to it about 2 1/2 yrs ago and think it's much better than using the drop in packets.

I'm switching to it once I get down to a couple of drop ins left. I need to get off my duff and start it with my gray tanks.

Some folks use Dawn dish soap instead of laundry detergent, dont think it really matters. The Calgon water softener can be hard to find in some areas and some only have it in powder form, but it all works. Some will tell you that if you cant find Calgon to use Borax as it is more readily available. Problem I see there is that Borax is not a water softener, so will it be as effective in keeping the side walls of the tanks slick?? And although there are tons of opinions, I have yet to hear of someone crawling into their holding tank to check out how slick the side walls are with one vs the other.

Does anyone know if you have to provide proof of insurance to purchase a used travel trailer and plate in Ontario?

I started using the geo method about 5 camping trips ago. We are only weekend warriors and it made sense to me that the chem packets wouldn't be doing their job over the 2 or 3 days we use the toilet. I haven't noticed much of a difference, the black tank gauge still reads 3/4 after I dump, but I haven't done a real good tank flush yet. I add the Calgon and dawn dish soap along with 8-10 gallons of water before I leave home. I figure the sloshing during the drive will help.

Geo Method

Vstrom
Add a bag or two of ice with some water in the black tank and see if that helps.

When we leave the campground, I put a cup of SuperClean, 1 cup of Pinesol and about 2 or 3 gallons of water in the black tank and about 1/2 that amount in the 2 grey tanks. Works great. Also have the Blue Streak on the toilet and use a mixture of 1 part SuperClean, 1 part Pinesol and 1 part water in the tank which disposes the mixture with each flush.

I started this trailer, new, with the geo method. Went a few weeks before we needed dumping and still the tank read 3/4. A few fills with the hose and dumps it read fine after that. I will try it again and see if it is cumulative over time, but bought a flush king none the less for lots of water when dumping.

I've been using the "Geo method" for about 4 years now. Works great. However, about mid summer last year I started getting a bad smell when the toilet would be used.I use a "Flush King" and know that when I'm done dumping the water coming out is clear.

I tried dumping and back flushing repeatedly to no avail. I started reading around and I believe found an article from the same author of the "Geo Method".
His answer......use a little bleach once in a while. According to him, sometimes you get an over production of bacteria in the tank.

Dump the tank and back flush till it runs clear. Dump some bleach down toilet and back fill with water. Let it sit for 15 or so minutes and dump. Odor was gone instantly and haven't had a problem since.

Now I do this once mid season, and at the last dump of the season before it gets put away. Opens up in the spring with absolutely no orders.

After reading this thread I am thinking about doing the following: at the end of each camping trip fill each tank with water softener and laundry detergent and use a garden hose to completely fill the tanks, then drain the solution in them just before the next camping trip. By filling the tanks completely the sensors would be sure to be cleaned.
