1/2 cup does 30 gallons

Bleach comes in different concentrations, but a little extra won't hurt. I leave mine in over night, and then have to flush a couple of times to get the taste out.

City water systems try to have a residual chlorine content somewhere around 2%. That is so if you have some contamination in your lines, there is some chlorine left to attack it.

Chlorine is an oxidant, and super high concentrations will cause oxidation in your hot water heater if you leave it for too long.

I have some little strips like you use for pool testing that tell me what my residual chlorine is.

Chlorine disipates over time, so it makes sense to put fresh water into your tank before a trip.

If this were true, we would all be white...or dead.

The residual chlorine content in municipal water systems is closer to 0.2 to 2 PPM (Parts Per Million). This is actually a maximum of 0.0002%.

I just wanted to clear this up so somebody doesn’t think it’s safe to drink water with a residual chlorine content of 2%.
