this may be stupid ,but is there an adjustable t-stat for the water heater . I can't seem to find one on mine.

Not a stupid question at all. The answer though, is no. The DSI water heaters do not have a thermostat on them, at least not mine. They are preset by somebody at the factory that decides how hot you need to have your water.

that sucks. maybe I have a problem then. ours only gets luke warm at best. I have even tried electric with gas.

Most of them use a thermal switch that is in contact with the side of the tank. They are small, round and have two wire leads connected to them. They are sometimes refered to as TCO (Thermal Cut Off) switches. The switches are used on many RV appliances and are available in many different temperatures. Water heaters are set to 140 degrees typically. On some heaters there may be two of them the 2nd one is a safety and is set at 160 or 180 degrees. You would need a parts breakdown of your water heater to see where your switches would be located. You can buy the switches and just replace with primary with the setting you want. In many cases it is more work than it is worth in my opinion.

Check your winterization bypass valves and make sure they are in the proper position. If the one from hot to cold is left open, (behind the water heater normally), you won't get very much hot water. Search other post on here for diagrams and directions.

Also here is a thought. If you are VERY CAREFUL you
could try pulling the handle on the pop off valve on
the water heater. Wear rubber gloves and stand back but
what I'm suggesting is to get some water out of there and
see if it really is luke warm. If it's uncomfortably hot as
I suspect it will be, then you have a bypass valve set
1/2 way or all the way in the wrong position.
Let it cycle on until it's "hot" and then shut off gas and
electric before you try this!!

You don't say what make or model of HW heater you have
but I believe they now come with 120 degree preset
thermostats. You can order one that's 10 or 20 degrees
hotter from the factory or some well stocked parts
places.

Solution: Place valves in proper position

Problem: Thermostat not seated against tank
Solution: Re-seat thermostat

Problem: Defective thermostat
Solution: Replace thermostat

i thought my heater was junk to until i took the panel off and saw the bypass valve was open aswell!!
