If you look back at the post by wmtire he posted a link that explains it all. Against all logic, apparently the "water heater" switch controls only the propane ignition to the heater and is not an " on/off" switch as one might suppose.

The white one is the battery/Gas switch.

It ONLY works the propane way of heating water. The black one outside ONLY works the "shore power" way of heating water. The only common thing to the two systems is the water in the tank.

the dealer should have explained the different systems to you, during the PDI. if they didn't, i sure would be complaining about that.

any decent PDI would have explained that Suburban WH's have an outside electric switch and the toggle switch inside, next to the red light, is ONLY for the propane side.
