The water heater bypass is used to remove the water heater from the system when winterizing. If the WH is drained via the drain plug or anode rod, it does not require the addition of antifreeze. Without the WH in the system, winterizing requires between 3/4 gal and 2 gals of antifreeze ( depending on model / size of RV. With the WH in the system, between 7 and 9 gals of antifreeze would be required. It would also be more effort to clear the system in the spring. Most RV's have a bypass. If the RV has been winterized it is critical that the bypass be switched to normal use prior to firing up the WH ( either electric or propane) or the WH can be damaged.
