Hot Water Drain Valve
Looking for a replacement for the drain valve on my HWS. See pic - does anyone have a part number or vendor for one of these. Mine is cracked and leaking (hence the duct tape)

You're after a 1/2" NPT ball valve. It makes it simple to add an easy shut-off.

Looks like the hot water side of your low point drain. Just measure the pipe size and go to Home Depot or Lowes and tell them what you have and they can supply your with a replacement fitting. While you are at it install a ball valve on the end so you don't have to mess with it when you winterize next time.

does using the red drain take the place of removing the anode rod to drain the water heater?

No. Pull out the anode rod and flush the water heater to get the crud out of the bottom to keep it from getting into the rest of the water system. You may need a new rod if yours is used up. I have a Suburban and takes a 1-1/16 socket to remove the plug at the bottom that has the anode rod. Jay

Open the pressure relief valve on the WH before you remove the anode rod or you will get your Saturday eve shower early. After you remove the anode rod flush the bottom of the tank out to remove any residual crud from the anode rod.

Nope.
First, hot water leaves the tank from the top, so draining hot side will leave the tank mostly full. Cold drain might drain more, but that may pull crud back into your plumbing.
In any case, you should to take a look at the anode to see how much wear it has. Replace it if it is getting really skinny, some folks replace it annually regardless of wear. Also take the time to rinse as much crud out of the water heater as possible. I've seen recommendations that filling the water heater with a strong vinegar solution and leaving it sit overnight with either propane or electric keeping it hot will remove most of the scale build up if there is much in there. I bought one @ our local RV dealer as soon as I found we had a caped line,,, just incase we lost one !!!

Suburban sent us a series of instructional videos on the care and use of their water heaters. You can find all 5 of them at this link, which include the anode rod, flushing and sediment removal, pressure relief valve, odors, and the bypass valves.

Take the caps and put them in a drawer for safe keeping and get two 1/2" PVC ball valves and put them on in place of the caps. No lost cap, no cracked cap, easier to drain. I replaced all the caps on my 2018 Cherokee the day we brought it home from the dealer.
