We have a suburban hot water heater. It has an electric toggle switch outside on the heater and a propane switch inside the camper. It is a new 2012 Flagstaff 26FKSS. When we picked it up from the dealer, the gentleman told us that we could not run both electric and gas at the same time. However, the instructions right on the tank itself talk about turning the electric on and then the gas. Last season we only used the electric toggle switch and not the propane. However, over our last trip we had issues with the water heater as the bypass was on and mixing cold water with the hot. As a result of this issue we were reading the tank itself and discovered the directions. Now we are totally confused as to how to run the water heater properly without damaging anything. Can someone please offer theri words of wisdom to this complicatiing issue??? The owners manulas are too generic to help; we need an expert's advice.from this forum.
Both the electric and propane are separate systems, and both will heat your water sufficiently. But, to heat your water faster (like back to back showers), you can definitely use both sytems at the same time.
If you are at a campground that provides electricity for free, use their power and save your gas.

If you have both on the gas burner will not lit till you drain most of the hot water from the tank then both the electric and propane will heat the water. As stated in previous post water will heat faster when using both.
