installing a handicap handle in shower

I'm wanting to install a handicap handle in our shower for my wife. Has anyone done this? Where can I purchase one, how hard are they to install.

Handicap rails require lots of support not found in many RV shower areas! Youroo!!

Try a Handicap specialty house.
I found a portable one that uses suction cups on both ends. It's not made for full weight lifting but for steadying and providing some support to lift oneself up.
Make sure the surfaces are clean and will take the suction without an air leak.
Also take it off and reattach it occasionally.

Those suction cup things work great in our tiled bath, but he walls in the camper are more like wallpaper on cardboard. BTW Harbor Freight has the best prices on the suction cup handles.

I'm thinking about making plywood reinforcements on both sides of the bathroom wall...that span the entire area and use them as a reinforcement for the grab bar.

As mentioned, finding something to mount the rails to is going to be difficult. Might be better off with a freestanding type of support rails.

We have installed handicap handrails in our home bathroom, but our Aframe doesn't have bathroom facilities. You can purchase handrails at Home Depot, Lowe's, Amazon, etc. I would hesitate on suction cup ones just for the simple fact if they fail or come loose it could be disasterous.

To install the handrails, my husband having been in construction, used a 2x4 approximately 1' longer than the handrail. He mounted the 2x4 on all of the available studd locations. Then mounted the handicap handrail to the stud. So much easier and you don't have to match the handrail ends to a stud that may or may not be available. I don't know about the structure of your TT and available support points. Something to check out.

Randy, if your shower stall has a smooth plastic liner, this is the one for you! It has a REALLY GOOD suction cup at each end. Just place it where you want it and lift the lever at each end.

We bought one to use at home and had to return it because our shower has the old-style 4-1/4" square tiles and there was no way to position the handle such that one end didn't span a seam and not seal. But even the one end held on really tight. We couldn't budge it. (That's why you need a seamless shower stall as all the plastic one are.)

I thought about using one of these, but afraid that it would punch holes in the floor of shower. (???)

I bought a suction cup version at Bed, Bath and Beyond for one our bathrooms at home. Work great, only came off wall once in about two years. The walls must be smooth and clean.

As mentioned above, if installing on tile make sure the suction cups are entirely on the tile.

There was a vendor at FROG last year selling all kinds of HD Suction Cup things. I don't remember any being specifically for the shower.......most were outside (flags, flag poles, etc)........but I bet they'd work.

I don't remember their name............

Harbor Freight sells these in 2 sizes for cheap! The do work very well. It's worth buying one there and trying it out.

I have 4 Harbor Freight Grab Handles in my home shower for my handicapped wife. I also keep one in the car for times we do a motel on the road. I check them before she uses them. No problems so far.

The more expensive ones have an indicator that shows red if the suction has let go - I prefer to just give them a good tug before they're used.

I thought the Moen was a screw-in model. I don't think the plastic shower liner would hold that, and it would be hard to fit a 12" bar across 16" on-center studs.

Gotta go with a suction cup model.
