Ok, lets take a poll. Who removes their water pump to save 6 dollars in anti-freeze....

Anyone?

Come on, somebody?

Who REPLACES their water pump every year because of inadequate winterization?

I did a web crawl on the forum and could not find one example. This could be because anyone who uses anti-freeze would never have the issue or those that blow out their lines run the pump dry when they drain their fresh tank for the winter or they went "barefoot" and were lucky (or very quiet about it if the pump check valve failed due to ice.).

In any case I am thinking the "at risk" pool is very small.

OK by me

I did learn a lot about the water system and where the check valves were located. I even bought a pre-made water blow out fitting to hook up to the city water connection to switch from RV antifreeze to air. MUCH cheaper way to winterize (all things being equal).

Then Acadianbob mentioned the water pump and I remembered the fresh water side check valve is IN the pump. Without blowing the air through the pump, it is possible (however unlikely) for the water trapped in there to freeze and damage it. Now the pump is just a hundred bucks and easy to change, but why take the chance?

Maybe it would not be such a bad idea to damage the cheap pump .
It would be an excuse to buy a new quieter more powerful one

Instead of these maybe`s, and probably`s and hopefully`s why not just use the RV antifreeze that is non-toxic and not worry?!
