Leak at City water fill spigot

When running water to the city water hook up on my travel trailer water was leaking from the connection then I went in the rig and found water running through the rig. This is our first time out in our new trailer. Have we hooked this up wrong? Also we did use a pressure regulator too. Kept psi at 50. Thanks in advance for your response.

First, welcome to the forum.

As long as you hooked up your hose to the city water inlet and not the blank tank flush, you likely didn’t do anything wrong.

Where was the water coming from inside the rig? The leak outside would suggest there was no rubber washer in the city water connection port.

Is this a brand new trailer or did you buy it used? I ask because if you bought it new you should have had a pre-delivery inspection with the city water connected to demonstrate how everything works.

Thanks for the reply. We did buy it new and received a dealer walk thru. However the dealer only said to get a 90 degree connection which we did. The leak was happening around the house connection and behind the wall where the connection inlet is.

Remove the three screw's from the inlet and pull away from trailer carefully. Reattach hose and check fittings for leak.

Someone suggested stacking a second washer. I had a slow dribble and did just that. No more dripping and attaching the hose to the inlet is easier since there’s not as much screwing on to do. I’d try that first. Pretty simple and almost free.

I don't think a second washer will stop a leak inside a wall. Sounds like the fitting/hose behind the wall is leaking.

You may not even have to remove the city water fitting from the wall.

Go inside the R/V to where the city water connection is on the outside and look for the plumbing connection to the back of the city water port (you may have to remove a panel or drawer) and you likely can tighten the connection on the back side. You'll also need to check the clamps and the hoses as sometimes they don't get a good seal from the factory but hopefully it is just a loose connection.

It is a shame your dealer didn't connect a hose to the city water port and check for leaks.
I suspect they didn't do a lot of other things either.

Best of luck and let us know how you make out.

The back side of the city water port will look something like this...

City Water Connection Issue resolved

All it required was a washer. Although, I'm still feeling cautious, so far the water has been connected for 30 minutes with no leaks inside or out. Thank you to everyone helped us. This is a great community and as new RVers we have learned a lot from all of you. Thanks again.

Thanks for reporting back with your solution.

I have to ask... was the washer required on the outside where the hose attaches or on the inside where the plumbing line attaches?

If outside and the original leak caused water to penetrate into your R/V, you still have an issue. Water running down over the outside of the city water connection should not leak into the inside of the R/V. That port is to be sealed to the outer wall of the R/V. If it is not, you will get the same water penetration when it rains.

The washer was installed at the outside connection. We're thinking that the weight of the hose in addition to no washer was affecting the pressure valve so it back flowed into the rig. Been watching for leaks everything is bone dry so far. But, like I said earlier I'm cautious and want to make sure this is not an issue. We'll be pulling the wall panel when we get home tomorrow and make sure the connection is secure. Thanks for all your help.

Just to be on the cautions side, you might turn off the city water if you leave for a while and when you turn in for the night just until you are 100% sure problem solved. You can run a little water in your fresh tank to use with pump overnight for emergencies.

My new TT in May of 2017, I had to go thru and tighten every water fitting on City water connection, both outdoor showers, both sinks...bath / kitchen. Every one of them were dripping. Hand tightened and all were good.

We're thinking like you. Turn off the water if we need to leave There were several things we needed to tighten down before we took this little trip.

Thanks to everyone on this thread for helping us out. Much gratitude!!!

Friend of mine flooded his because the plastic fitting for city water, cracked behind the wall. He and I after finding out, ordered a complete brass unit and installed that just to be sure not happen again. Just remember that it has the built in check valve, if buying one!!!

Why is that not surprising to hear that it cracked! I'll keep that in mind. It may be good to install a brass one for sound sleeping. Thanks a bunch.
