low point drains

Hey all, just wondering, a close friend told me I should leave my low point drains open all winter. I have never heard of that before. I just assumed that after you drained them they would fill up with antifreeze when the antifreeze is added through the water pump. Any thoughts?

I would not leave them open.
Have you checked to see if there is AF in the drain yet?

No, I plan to winterize it tomorrow.

Put in a gallon or so and then check the low points.

IF you just blow out to winterize you CAN leave your low point drains open but not neccssary. IF you use anti-freeze, then you MUST close the drains otherwise the anti-freeze will be expelled.

We pretty much don't have "winters" here in So Cal so I leave my low point drains open. One thing I did find out on my last outing (only two outings so far) is that the blue drain is the hot and the red is the cold.

After I blow my lines and add antifreeze through the pump, I release the pressure and drain the lines of whatever antifreeze might come out. Might sound like a waste, but I know whatever is in the lines is antifreeze, and the lines don't need to be full to be protected. I then cap the lines to keep bugs and such out. If you don't want to drain the lines, I would at least release the pressure.
