Odor in bathroom from Black Tank .....

I have been told by the DW ask for help concerning the odor in our bathroom that seems to be coming from the black tank. Is this even possible first of all? Secondly what do I need to do to get rid of it? This has now become my top priority according to my sweet DW !

If you have a Dometic model 300 toilet it might be the problem, read thread below....

Are you using a tank treatment with odor control?

Are you putting some water in the bowl after use?

What type of deodorizer are you using, how hot is it there, how often do you dump and flush? These are just some of the questions that could cause your order. O yea, what about that bathroom vent?

Also, never run the vent fan when using the loo, it sucks the putrid smell out of the tank. Wait till yer done and then turn the vent on.

We too are getting ordor in our 282rk. But it's not confined to just the bathroom. The 282 has a dresser bureau on the other side of the bathroom wall of the toilet and when you open the drawers, the odor is there also, as well as in the cabinet under the sink.
Could it be the toilet seal going into the black tank wafting up odors into the underbelly space and seeping out at the hole for the hose, vent pipes etc?

I've read on other posts that Dometic 300s are being replaced by the manufacturer as defective.

check the vents on the roof are the open. You can also install the vents that spin into the wind to make sure if the air is blowing hard it is not blowing into the tank.

Dealing with odors.

1) Found a dish cloth under sink in kitchen that turned into a science project.

2) Traveling sloshed water out of the shower trap allowing odors from the gray tank to permeate the bathroom. Troubleshot toilet for hours before a member suggested it might be decaying food from gray tank. Filled trap and problem went away.

3) Poo under ball/flap valve but above the tank. Turbo flush will not clean this. Used flush Wand and a shaped toilet bowl brush to clean best I can during winterizing. Worst case; remove and pressure wash.

I had a problem with another camper and tried all kinds of things. Finally, I got one of these. http://www.lslproducts.net
It pulls just enough of a suction on the vent pipe so that you never get any odor through the toilet. I could even run the bathroom fan when flushing and not have any odors escape. DW was finally happy!

Thanks everyone for the input .... the latest is I washed out the Black tank until water was completely clear coming out of the tank ...... We put the deodorizer in as we have since we got the trailer, we keep a small amount of water in the bowl ........was for sure that this would solve the issue but nope, still have the odor. Man this really bites, a brand new trailer should not have an odor coming from the toilet .

The vent for the gray tank is also in the bathroom, probably in the lavatory cabinet. Make sure there is water in the shower trap and in the lavatory trap. Pulling the lever too fast will let the water pull the trap dry and you get stink from the gray tank as the vent is too small. I always run some water in the sink, shower and lavatory after dumping to insure the traps are full.

I called Dometic this week. They are no longer replacing with the 310 model. They have retooled the 300 and will send you that model. However, I wanted the 310 for china bowl. Camping World is working with Dometic on recall swap and only charging me the difference (approx $22) to get 310.

From experience I can state that "washing out" your black or grey water tank WILL NOT get all of that stuff out you need to get out. It only takes a small amount of matter in either, or both, tanks to ferment and create a bad odor. I found out all of this the hard way. After camping and feeling that I had dumped ALL of my black and grey water at the campsite dump stations I would bring the unit home and park it. A few days later there would be a putrid smell in the camper. I learned from another camper to pour at least a quart of "Simple Green" into each of the tanks before leaving the campground area. As little an amount this is it will slosh in the tank on the way home. I made one of the macerator pumps from a household garbage disposal and I run the waste stream from it to my home septic system. After I get home with the camper I bring a water hose in through the bathroom window, stick it into the toilet, and let it run fast. Well, as fast as the macerator pump will pump it out. I also use one of the wands designed to clean out the tank, and as one post pointed out--I clean the area between the flush valve and the top of the tank really good. I do run the garden hose to the kitchen sink and let it flow as fast as the pump will pull it out for the grey tank. When I finish I leave about five (5) gallons of water in each tank with some Calgon auto dishwashing detergent and some Simple Green in each tank. I use the little packets of Calgon for this. So far this has worked to keep those ugly smells down.

If you follow this link posted by Fonzie it will take you to a previous thread that discusses in length the issue with the 300 and in there is also Dianes email address and a phone number. We have not tried either of them yet so do not know if they are still valid. DW has them written down but I don't know where at the moment.
