question -- do you drink the water ?

I read a post this morning from dot76
regarding the filtering of water
said post is on thread referring to
Fresh water tank - can't use all water

here is the post from dot76
I agree with sirsea on that one. I'd rather carry extra water in cans than use the bottom of the tank. And as far as filtration goes, I'd rather over filter and be able to drink it than to under filter and use bottled water that costs 100 times as much and is nothing more than over filtered water.

I agree with dot76 and here is the question

((((( do you drink filtered water or bottled water ? )))))

I have tested water wells for GPM and potability for many years now
and I'm very surprised how many people
do not drink their well water and instead buy bottled water
even after all lab test on said water have came back fine to drink
seems like a big waste of money

some waters although potable
do have slight taste and or odor issues
but
filtering usually easily removes these

I actually took in a sample of bottled water once to be tested
believe it or not
it failed

a little too much bacteria in water is no big deal
a touch too much iron no big deal
but
nitrates are a different issue

a note here if I may
most all RV parks in the US that use water wells
must have their water tested periodically for potability

so why don't all
just drink the filtered water ????

We don't drink our water out of the camper tap. I keep a gallon milk jug in the camper and fill it with drinking water from a spigot and we drink that.

We double filter our drinking water. First, blue torpedo inline filter. Second, countertop filter like this PUR 18 Cup Water Filter Dispenser: Appliances : Walmart.com For coffee and we fill a pitcher for the fridge.

there are many excellent filters

the zero water unit below is not what I use
but
wouldn't it still be much better than buying bottled water ?

most of us that work in the water field
do not buy bottled water
a simple filter turns out the basic same results
and then for a few bucks extra
Home Depot has a really nice carbon filter
read the side of the box to see what it removes
amazing
far far far less money than bottled water

question
so how much does bottled water cost these days
I think that it is about the cost of gas
wow something is wrong here

from the testing I have done

on many hundreds of water samples

City waters, well waters and bottled waters throughout so Calif

my conclusion is

bottled water is so over rated

expensive !

The water where we live is not real good so I have an RO system at home and we fill bottles from that for drinking water. If we run out we buy drinking water, but we care a good supply from home. Back in Wisconsin we were close to an Artesian well that we got drinking water from.

We drink our water at home - straight from the well, no filter. With the camper we dring the water from the campground, it is run thru a filter only because the filter came with the camper. Mountainmanbob can correcty me probably if I'm wrong but if memory serves me correctly you only need to run surface water down thru 12' of ground to purify it enough for drinking. With most wells being 100' on avg. that's more then enough to purify the water.

We use the onboard filter assembly and run a Rain Fresh CF2 carbon filter in it. Works great . I have a larger version of this in our house as I haul water and store it in a cistern for house. I put a new filter in every spring as they are only abt 7 bux ea when I buy them in a 2 pak from the local farm store. IMO it is the same difference as spending a bunch of money on adding a seperate drinking tap and filter unless you go to a reverse osmosis system for it.

Great discussion! I've been meaning to sanitize our Roo since we got it; I'm used to drinking bottled water because our county water is horrible. It may be safe but it's not tastey. Well, I do use it but I don't go to the kitchen to get a glass of water from the spigot. I guess that's why I tend to pick up spring water for the camper. It says it has a filter, I should investigate this this weekend coz you're right, it would be much less expensive.

On my small ranch in SE Texas I have two water wells and I have had both of them tested, both are good and the water tastes great and it is very clear. They are both deep water wells. When we RV we bring gallon milk bottles full of our well water to drink, cook and make coffee. We don't drink water from our fresh water tank in our RV nor do we drink RV park water. When we go for extended trips we buy bottled water.

We have well water at home and it is great. 512' well. Only has a little iron in it, not enough to stain. The MH has a built in filter system and we drink the water when at RV parks, unless the filter does not take out bad tastes. Then we go to bottled water. I kind of look at it this way. I have read of no massive outbreaks of illness or deaths at some RV park over the water, never. If it is good enough for the owners, then I consider it good enough for us.

not sure of the exact distance needed

not an expert on the exact distance needed
but
you are right
it does not take long running through the earth to be pure again
unless there has been some toxic dumping in the area
as I said before nitrates are a common problem in well water
caused sometimes from
chicken ranches, thick vegetation etc. etc.
nitrates can be very hard to clean up
common bacteria which is most often found in water
is very easy to clean up
chlorine, or bleach the usual tool used

some public wells that test often for too much bacteria
might require a chlorine injector in the well

Mountainman

PS
getting back to the thread
over the last 20 something years living here on this well
due to my inexpensive two filters installed
I have saved many thousands of dollars
that would have been spent on bottled water
and
this water is super clean to the eye
and
taste great
and
at the water lab test AOK

We don't drink water stored in the tank, even when we lived on the boat. But we do use the CG water which runs thru the on-board filter which is then filtered again in a Pur pitcher for drinking and making ice. We also keep a case of bottled water to take along when sightseeing and for guests.

I never drank from my old campers. I never took care of them. I was a kid at the time. Now, I will keep everything sanitized, use the incoming water filter as well as a Pur filter. In fact, at my house, I have been filling up my Pur pitcher and drinking from it while getting the camper ready.

Our tank is new and we sanitized it and put about 8-10 gal of water from home in it and drink it if needed. Usually use campground water thru the onboard filter and drink it also unless it has an odor or makes bad coffee, then we buy a 5 gal jug @ Lowes or WalMart for coffee, tea and just drinking water.

I've never sanitize our system which is why I use spigot water instead.
