Rust in water heater?!?!?!
So i did my quarterly water heater check, rustly/brown came out of the relief valve! I drained the water heater and a little more rusty water came out. My anode rod looks brand new still (replaced earlier this year). I looked at the clear lines i installed at the tank and there is this red/blood like color coating the inside line, help! I cleaned i of the clear short hose, but its all the way up white oem hose going to the pump.
About to do the usual vinegar/water boil, but i feel there may be rust at the bottom of the water heater tank, should i boil some bleach in the heater?
I use city water, and always have the cheapy camco inline filter.

Rust in tank
I'm not sure if the small water tanks have a glass lining or not. I know the large home tanks do. It appears your zinc rod is not doing the job. I would replace the rod with a new one. There should not be that much rust in the tank to discolor the water lines. Is it still under warranty? some have a two
year warranty. I would contact the MFG of the water heater to inquire about the rust.
I have a tank that is 5 years old and no rust!

I did not, i live in san diego, figured i didnt need it. It hasnt been sitting long (a month), and when we used the trailer we didnt see any discolor from the sink or shower

From what i can see inside the little drain whole, it does look like there is some kind of coating. The zinc rod is a camping world brand i think

I just checked the sediment trap on the water pump, its clear, no red or rust, did find some plastic pieces and a dead bug, gross

Before any period of inactivity/storage I always flush the hot water heater thouroughly and after all the rust is gone it's good for the trip!

Just a small pet peeve, it is a "Water Heater", not a "Hot Water Heater". If the water were already hot there would be no need to heat it, would there?

if the rod looks new the problem might be too much telfon tape. Our tank has a blue lining.

If the water coming OUT of the heater is hot, could we call it a "Hot Water Maker"?

I have noticed the anode rod fitting (or maybe the "bung hole"?) on my water heater has always been really rusty, since day one (8 years) but the tank itself has always been fine. Perhaps that's where your rust is coming from? When I clean/check my anode rod I scrub the fitting with a wire brush.
And to much Teflon tape may be an issue. Just enough so it doesn't leak and I usually leave the first few threads uncovered for a good "ground"

Well i got a suburban brand anode rod, so well see if that helps, cause i did notice rust on the camco threads,
But does anyone know why there is this red crap in the hoses?

My best guess is left over antifreeze. Just about all the plumbing in an RV is plastic. The water heater tank is either aluminum or stainless steel. I can't think of any source of rust/corrosion that would leave a red stain inside the RV.
Aluminum will corrode/oxidize but that makes a grey color, not red.

In manufacturing the tank, maybe the glass lining did not coat the entire
inside of the tank. This could cause the tank to show rust from the uncoated surface.

It is possible that the campground water had a very high content of dissolved iron and when heated, it will precipitate out and cause the rust coloring you are seeing.

Its really weird, from the fresh tank to the pump there is this deep red crud, it looks like a raspberry got into the tank, the stuff dries like a deep blood color...
I was able to get a scope maybe half way up the hose (from tank to pump) and its half way coated, there was a slight kink in the hose and i couldnt get the scope past it, but the hose looked clear at that point.
Again, im not sure that red crap got passed the pump because the sediment trap is clean on the pump itself...
As for the water heater itself, Im going to check it and the suburban anode rod later today to see if it helped with the rust. We used the trailer this weekend, so its only been sitting since sunday night. During the weekend, cold and hot water came clear from sinks and showers

I have no idea, but we would figure it would be happening to more people than me, usually the places i go too get super busy too.

My tank is aluminum, yours could be too. My guess is the water supply has a high iron content. Are you using a good filter in your water line before it goes to the water heater? Anode rods are pretty much the same. Your old one was working fine from the way it looked.

Bingo!
Very common problem here in Western PA.
Iron filters are a must on most well supply systems.
Turns EVERYTHING red without.
