sanitize water heater

Just bought a used tent trailer to go along with my surveyor so the kids can go without inhabiting our RV. I know how to sanitize the water system but wonder if there is a danger of running the bleach/water solution into the water heater? There was water left in the water heater for a couple years. Will heating and draining the water heater a couple times do the job? Will the bleach, if run into the water heater , hurt the w/h or its lines?

Any help is greatly appreciated

No, bleach/water solution will not hurt anything concerning the water heater. My yearly system sanitation includes the water heater.

While it won't hurt anything...I did decide last year to include the water heater in the process, and it took a very long time to be rid of the bleach smell coming from the hot water. I don't think simply flushing it a couple times will do the trick. At first it seemed like it was alright after flushing it a couple times, but once the water heater was fired up and water allowed to get hot, the smell and taste was there.
