I changed our air admittance valve in our Rockwood 8312SS in the first season... presented as you describe, but odor was in the bunkhouse area near outdoor kitchen. The manufacturers use the cheapest valves they can find. They are almost all 1 1/2" NPT... just unscrew and replace.
