We only use ours as needed, like you, so I was surprised the rod was so consumed after only one season.

I did not have a 1 1/16" socket, but had a 27mm one left over from a foreign car repair way back. It also works.

I hadn't used my TT for at least 6 months prior to removing the anode rod. Not worried about heat it's the pressure that stays in there. Hence the relief valve.

I like to use my 1.0625" socket. It is a 0.500" drive so I've got plenty enough leverage.

My 1 4/48" fits like a saddle on a goose.

anode removal

To the guy with the wet shirt- LOL there is a learning curve to RV'S- I know a guy- heh heh -(me) who on his first trip with an RV - checked everything with his new toy at home, then went camping! when leaving camp and at the dump station, squatted down, pulled off the drain cap, only to learn that I had not closed the black tank handle when I had checked out everything at home!! and the stuff on my shirt was not white!

Thank you DeeWayne...I feel a LOT better now about the anode rod. OMG what a mess you had, and you were all ready to hit the road to home or on to the next campsite. Guess you had to hook up again and do a cleanup before getting into the truck. I always look at those valves, as I am sure you do now, to insure they are closed before I slowly pull off the cap; I have a vision of what it would be like if they were opened, so I try to be careful. Now I can put a name with my vision...sorry, but it's yours.

Heh Heh- - might add-- my camping buddies who laughed at me- they are all afraid to "NOT CHECK" their black water valves or handles.- You never know when some camping "kid" or vandal might go by and pull it some night!! LOL

Hence, why the "clear" adapter/elbow was invented.... most likely from someone who had the same thing happen ONCE.

With these, you can see before you remove the cap.

Or someone who you pissed off at the campground by not minding YODB!

Might be the same guy who strategically placed the open can of sardines under your rig in an area with a Racoon infestation.

If you have time and access you could always wire tie a harmonica somewhere in the engine compartment.

I found that one of the four "ends" (1-1/16") of my truck's four-way "cross wrench" lug nut remover was a good fit for my anode rod, and allowed me to remove it with very little effort.

Keep in mind that the truck version has larger sizes than the automotive variety. It looks like this:

This ad-on valve has helped others minimize the amount of surprise:

Twist On Waste Valve, 3 - $18.65

Not as good as the harmonica but.......
