Question Solved- Water heater malfunction

Second day into a 34 day trip and the hot water heater isn't working. We have a new 2012 Solera. Used it for camping weekly end of last year. The light flickers and turns off. Thought that was good. The water gets warm and then cold again. It will get warm more than once but never get hot? Having just de-winterized it, I am confident the anode is ok. Don't know what else to look for.
Any help?

The anode rod has nothing to do with the water getting hot, but the winterization valves do. Make sure that both water valves on the lines connected to the water heater are open, and the valve that bridges those 2 lines is closed completely.

The anode has nothing to do with the functioning of the water heater. It is mearly for keeping the minerals in the water from attacking the water heater tank. It is a sacrificial element that should be changed periodically.

It sounds like the thermostat might be defective or possibly the gas orifice is partially plugged. Does it work on electricity? Also check that the bypass valve is in the closed position.

The light is telling you that the temp has dropped to the point that it needs the fire lit to heat the water. The red light should come on and then go out once it gets hot and stops calling for heat.

If it is flickering, it is trying to light; and failing for some reason.

The fact that it lights after 1 or 2 tries, means that the mixture is not optimum.

My money is on a bugs nest in the venturi tube.

IF the light turns on and off again as the OP states it sounds like
the burner is lighting.
Question-- how long does the burner stay on???
If it's on for several minutes it's working.

I think the winterization valve(s) are not all in the correct position.

One way to check is to put on rubber gloves, open the outside hatch,
with the burner OFF!!! and stand back and pull the lever on the relief valve
near the top of the tank. Is the water that comes out really hot or just
luke warm??

IF it's hot, one or more winterization valves is turned wrong way for summer
use.

I assumed that "flickering" meant just that; on, then quickly off.

If it does run long enough to heat water, it is the valves for sure.

Chuck PM'd me and said he'd missed the center valve!

Sounds like another happy ending
