Suburban water heater shuts off at 85 degrees

Discovered our 2 yr old Suburban water heater doesn't get past a lukewarm temp on our maiden spring trip this year. After returning home and some trouble shooting I think it has something to do with the thermostat. The odd thing is heating with gas or electric doesn't matter - both methods shut down at 85 degrees. Also tried gas and electric both on - same result. Checked out the 2 emergency shut-off reset buttons. Pushed both of them but neither one was tripped. Per the YouTube videos looks like replacing the thermostat is really simple - but why would the gas and electric fail at the same time in the same way? Any ideas? Have a call into my service dept - waiting for their response.

Sounds like it’s still in bypass for winterizing.

Happens more times than people can count.

Did you de-winterize or have it done?

How are you measuring the temperature?

Maybe your bypass valves are set incorrectly and the cold is mixing with the hot.

A laser thermometer aimed at the relief valve might give you a clue.

Looks like Dave posted his question and logged out without seeing your answer.

Dave... the thermostats are likely shutting off at the correct temperature but if your valves are set incorrectly, you will have cold water mixing with the hot to cause lukewarm water at the faucet.

Please read this thread and verify you don't have the crossover valve incorrect. As stated, this is a very common thing and the reason we keep the following link as a sticky thread at the top of the plumbing section:

If you have an outside shower, make sure the valves are turned off not at the shower head.

Yep...that will get you every time. Got into the habit years ago to double check the valves. Too easy to get sidetracked and forget about it.

Nothing like blowing a half gallon of AF onto the ground cause you forgot to close a "Low Point" drain outside.

Ok, great to hear you are good to go.

Now, did your service dept ever return the call?

It has been over 24 hrs with no return call from my dealer. I like the feedback I get on this forum that always figures a solution for me.

Thank you for reporting back.
Many ask a question, find a solution and never return. That helps only the OP.
