The longer the better.

Those enzymes and bacterial need time to eat and dissolve any caked on crud.

Just Flush strongly after you dump.

White is ground or common near bottom of tank, Red is "Full" indicator at top of tank

Could it be the little red module/wire harness that the probes connect to and send the info back to the monitor panel could be bad?

The resistor pack is very easy to check (see values in the attached troubleshooting guide). These are normally very reliable and I don't think it is the trouble in this case.
