you can see the level if you really want to,.... yes, you're looking into a dark hole, thru flowing water, so it requires a little effort,.... helps if the room is dark and using a flashlight, just like you would looking into any other dark hole,..... but doing that is much more reliable than the tank monitors,.... after awhile you will learn about how many days it takes for you/your family usage to near the full level,..... that's how we monitor our black tank,...... there are hundreds of post complaining about the tank monitors,....... we don't rely on them so we don't have any complaints about them, but that's just us,....

with regard to gray and black tanks as soon as any scum accumulates on the walls of the tanks the indicators will read wrong and no matter what you do may never read correctly. With me it has been a trail and error with three tanks I have never filled the black tank full

Mine seem fairly accurate. I ran a check with a garden hose and an $8 water meter and found the lights to be within 5 gallons or so of what I expected. Go to Amazon and get your hands on one of those inexpensive hose end meters. Mine displayed 4.9 gallons after I filled a 5 gallon bucket... not bad.
