Thetford Aqua Magic II foot pedal spring....

I have a 2012 Signature Ultra Lite 8312SS, the last trip the foot pedal came off my toilet. Still works without the pedal, just have to manually activate the water and dump valve. Ordered a new pedal kit and just dealt with it until we got home. So, went to put the pedal on...somehow the spring came off while trying to get the pedal in the right position. I tried just about everything I could to get that sucker back on with no luck! I emailed Thetford and of course they told me the only thing I could do would be order a new toilet base to the tune of $80.(which comes with the pedal I just paid for) They said that they use a special tool to put the spring on at the factory and it would be impossible for me to get it back on.

So, anyone here ever have to deal with this? If so, how did you get the spring back on? Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Pictures of what you're dealing with would be helpful.

This shows the spring and the arrow shows where it needs to be hooked on.

Looks like a pair of pliers, or needle nose to grab and twist into place. Will probably need to pull toilet so you can get behind it to work.
