What’s most disgusting is putting something in a waste basket that HAS made the trip through your body — especially when that waste basket is uncovered and in full view of somebody other than yourself. Even when covered, though, the stench of feces will still escape, whether the lid is closed or open. If the waste basket is covered, how is it opened? Usually by hand. Feces then gets on the hand of whoever opened the lid. Even IF that person washes their hands after the transfer of feces, chances are great that they won’t get 100% of it off. Then they use the hand towel to dry their hands and some of the remaining feces is transferred to the towel that will, quite likely, be used by others after the fecal bacteria has multiplied. Then, one of those unwitting people goes to the kitchen to prepare their favorite casserole for the campground potluck dinner that evening. I suppose if they cook the casserole to 165 degrees everything should be safe to eat, but the thought of eating a meal prepared in an RV owned by somebody that I know stores their poo in a waste basket inside of that RV would be a deal killer for me — no matter how good everybody else says it tastes. That’s not me being squeamish — that’s me not wanting to get sick or die!
You can argue this until you’re blue in the face. You can debate how this is no different than babies and diapers, but you will never convince me that feces-laden toilet paper, left to ferment in a waste basket in an RV, is a good thing. It is disgusting and easily avoided.

Reading this post got me to thinking how anyone survives living on a dairy farm.
You can always use latex or vinyl gloves whenever you need to use the potty.

Honestly, I don't see that the cleanliness of public restrooms along the southern border are any different from anywhere else. They can be clean, they can be gross. Just depends on your timing of use relative to the last cleaning.
I've always said, people are gross, the bathroom is innocent.
Some of the grossest public restrooms I've encountered were in Boston . My timing was evidently bad....

That's what I was getting at. Just walking through a milk parlor could get you a little unpleasant. One time I was helping my high school buddy clean the barn and a cow did her thing. I ended up with poo on the face where most people put french fries. He laughed his "a" off, I spit. Both of us being farm boys we knew the risks. I survived. But then again maybe that's why I'm the way I am.

I’ve been a plumber for almost four decades. I start work every morning at 4:30 and I get home when I’m done; at least 12 hours later. I sometimes reach into waste pipes up to my armpit to pull out whatever needs to be pulled out. Sometimes I even climb 8 feet down into 4’ diameter sewage pump pits to do my work. I lay on peoples’ disgusting bathroom floors with my head crammed between the wall and the back of their toilets, practically kissing their toilet bowls.
I’ve seen and done some pretty nasty stuff over the years — much worse than what I just mentioned — and I still do. That’s my job.
But I would never do anything as disgusting as filling a waste basket with soiled toilet paper in my RV.

X2 Bruce, I have been in the Plumbing trade for 30 + years and had to work in some pretty nasty places with pretty nasty stuff, but will not be going there in my RV.

I bet you farmers have never stood at the screen on the intake of a sewage treatment plant. Cow poo ain’t nothin’!

I don’t think any poultry, livestock or dairy farmer would have a negative reaction to seeing or smelling this, other than being sick about seeing all of that good fertilizer going to waste. Farmers are resourceful people and many of them can turn poo into cash.
Every farmer I know lives in a home with a septic system. Never have I seen a waste basket filled with soiled toilet paper in any of their bathrooms.

Bruce, human waste is the least of your worries at that screen.

I don’t doubt that. Can you elaborate, please? I have never been to one of those screens.

Ependydad was throwing up in his mouth at the thought of used toilet paper being put in a waste basket. I don’t think a description of what hits that screen is needed on a public forum. You said you’ve been a plumber for nearly 40 years so you can probably imagine what people in a large urban center flush down their toilets. It all ends up at the treatment plant.

During my time working for a Geotech firm and installing and maintaining monitoring wells for ground water, Many times I was literally up to my knees in Cow Sh*t, as we placed many wells in and around feed lots to monitor for any ground water contamination. Cow Poo ? just smelly mud to me.

Yes, I can imagine. I have always wondered, though, how tires, trees and other such large items find their way into the system and all of the way down to the treatment plants. The largest single item I have ever retrieved after being flushed down a toilet was a softball. I just can’t picture somebody trying to cram a tire down.

Big stuff like that can't be flushed down a toilet. The only way they would have gotten into a sanitary sewer line is through an uncovered manhole. (I'm talking about the sanitary/wastewater sewers, not stormwater sewers. We don't have combined sewers and storm water sewers dump directly into the creeks or Lake Ontario unless the provincial government insists on a very expensive oil-grit interceptor.)
I didn't mention the stuff that occasionally gets put in the sanitary sewers illegally by large heavy industrial customers. We have some sewer lines on our systems maps that are highlighted in red because of regular violations that put some nasty industrial wastes in the sewers. We have several by-law enforcement officers who deal with those violators.
