Toilet Splashes When Flushing

Hi All-

I apologize if this is the wrong thread location. Anyway, I recently puchased my first travel trailer and hooked everything up this weekend at my campsite. Everything worked well, but I noticed that whenever I flushed my toilet the water sprayer is so powerfull that water sprays outside the toilet bowl. It is quite a bit of water and I something that I would prefer not to happen. Is there a setting or something that needs to be adjusted to prevent this from happening? Thanks everyone in advance for your help!

Regards,

Brad

I hope you're using a pressure regulator on the end of your fresh water city hose?

Not funny having toilet water spitting back at you. The toilet in our old TT used to do this occasionally even with a regulator in place. Our new TT with a different model of Thetford toilet doesn't do this at all and actually has a much better flushing/spraying action.

Having said this, we had one of those basic on-the-hose regulators that failed after less than a year. I only knew because I had installed a permanently mounted gauge on the inside. Bought another regulator and all was good. So you may want to see if your existing regulator is any good (if you have one). I'm thinking of getting one of the hose regulators with built in gauge.

ps: don't forget to put the regulator at the tap end of the hose, not the trailer end so that the hose won't get over-pressurized. And don't forget to take it home. Have seen a few regulators left behind!

This was discussed in another thread. Don't remember the Thread Title, and have to leave so no time to search. Seems like it was something like Dometic Toilet. Someone that is subscribed to that thread will probably post a link.

There is a solution there involving bending the deflectors down at the nozzle where the water enters the bowl.

When I repaired my Thetford toilet's flush valve I installed a PEX shutoff ball valve in the feed line. You can partially close it to restrict water flow if the regulator is not stopping the splashing.

I do not have a pressure regulator. Sounds like I will need to purchase one. Thanks everyone for helping out! Happy Camping!

What happens if you close the seat / lid before you flush?

When I close the lid, the water just sprays out from under the lid. I think the pressure regulator might fix the problem. I will keep everyone posted.

The (Bidet) models of water closets usually cost more. Less water pressure is the answer. Youroo!!

Yeah yoo, maybe he has a Bidet! No need for the age old discussion of which toilet tissue to use.

I have the same problem but I do use a pressure regulator. Noticed it when camping in Florida over spring break. Thought about doing what herk7769 has done but haven't had a chance to see what size I would need to get. I guess this weekend I will look at seeing if I can bend the deflector.

You mean about adding the 1/2 inch Sharkbite ball valve?

Or the "Bidet" mod? http://www.forestriverforums.com/for...c-v-15261.html

That was one of my favorite repairs. We use the spray attachment to fill the bowl when needed and wash down afterwards. The concentrated spray makes short work of the job and uses WAY less water when dry camping.

We had the same problem as the OP last weekend. We do have a pressure regulator.

I did find that if I held the pedal part way down I got splashing. But if I pushed it all the way down I didn't...

Just my observation.

Ball valve. I thought that would be a way to lower the pressure to the toilet.

Herk, is that ball valve you installed where you don't need a tool? I see where you had a tool to cut Pex but that looks like all.

Yep. Sharkbite fittings just push on.
Just cut the pipe square with the shear.
