Here is one example why I travel to my boondocks location with a full tank. We go to the Glamis sand dunes in the winter. Water can be purchased there for $.50 gal so it doesn't make sense to buy it there when I'm only driving 3 1/2 hours with full tanks. If I get there in off hours or non-weekends it isn't available.

We also boondock outside of Williams, AZ and there are no service trucks. The campgrounds, in town, will fill you up for $10 during certain hours. Again, I'm 3 1/2 hours away so I travel with full tanks.

Point being that there isn't a "one method suits all" for all of us.

I keep about 1/3 full tank so I can flush the toilet to keep the seals from drying out and when working around the camper I can wash my hands. If I was a boondocker I would not hesitate top keep a full tank using 1 tbl spoon bleach per 30 gal water, it was good enough for the US Navy and you don't see sailors having problems from drinking it.

Most bottled water is nothing more than tap water. Our lab tested 8 brands last year and 7 of 8 were nothing more than tap water.

Do you add that bleach regardless of your water source? I'm asking specifically because most places here actually do have city water at their CG water stations. So it should already have chlorine. I do personally like adding the extra chlorine "just to be sure" but then I don't drink it because it may kick it up over the safe Cl PPM. (It's clearly the pharmacist in me thinking. .

I don't boondock so when I'm at an RV park that has a city water supply the tank is in a bypass set-up. We use the city water for everything, but we do use a filter on the inlet. I just like to add a little bleach to keep anything from starting to grow and the amount of bleach I use would not be harmful to the human body.

I checked my fuel mileage one trip with an empty tank and anther similar trip with a full tank whenever I left the campground.

Didn't notice any measurable change in mileage for the entire trip. If your tow vehicle has enough HP to tow your trailer to begin with, 350# isn't going to make any difference. I've made a few trips from WA to CO where the wife and I only stopped in Wal-Mart lots or highway rest areas. Filling the tank when a known source of "good" water was available just became part of our routine.

I'd rather haul a tank full of water than a bathtub full of canned goods, etc. like I've seen some do.
