Hi need help, tried starting my suburban gas water heater,it lights up and goes off 2-3 minutes later.Try turning switch back on and doesn't work, apparently there is a lockout, which I don't understand the way it functions.

shameless plug for trailer Info so we know if it is a Gas and Electric or just gas.

Do you purge the gas line out before starting it up?
starting the burners on the stove before the water heater?

Does this happen when plugged into short power and also when on battery?

Check your batter voltage as I think you must have 12 voltDC to mak eit work. May be weak?

water heater

When we tried our water heater on the first trip. It would fire up then stop after a while. and sometimes not fire at all. My wifes uncle who happened to go with his rig to the same campground . Suggested i check the battery connections. Sure enough i could wiggle the neg wire. I tightend the wing nut and now it fires up and stays on. hope that helped

John we can better help you if you give us a little more info.
What year is your RV??
What brand and model is your water heater? (that info should be on
a sticker inside the burner access door)

Does it light again after sitting a while.
Is this the first time it's done it?

I would then try cleaning out the tube between the piot light back to the air vents in the tube. Many time mud dobbers or spiders build nests and clog the hole. I have seen this many times after not using a rig for awhile or over the winter.

Try it with some type of small flexible rod

Does the pilot stay lit on 'run'? You can get carbon buildup on the thermocouple that acts as an insulator and that can shut off the gas flow. A bit of sand paper will fix it.

My problem is wind blowing out my pilot and I don't have an elec start model or elec heater element.
