Water heater bypass 2005 Forester 2901

Winterizing. Went to bypass the heater found only a cold shutoff valve. Shut it and pulled the anode. Tank drained and I did not replace anode. Blew lines out and pumped in pink stuff. None went into heater, but pink came out of the hot faucets. I’m assuming there is some sort of one way valve on the water heater hot out line, but couldn’t find one. Thoughts?

You are fine. You have a check valve at the outlet for your HW. There are almost as many bypass designs as there are floor designs.

This pic show the most common ones. You have #4 circled on the middle right.
