Water heater - DSI fault on electric + propane

Itís been raining pretty hard and blown at times for 2 full days now. Earlier today, my wife noticed the ďDSI FaultĒ light was on in the control panel. I tried the classic computer guy fix, I turned it off and back on.

Came right back on with electric.

And then I tried switching to propane; and the same thing happened.

I almost wonder if the issue is rain intrusion to the water heater. But I havenít been outside to check.

Itís an Atwood. Any thoughts?

The DSI only applies to the propane. Simple and first thing to check is that you have propane

This post, although pertaining to a Suburban water heater, works similar to an Atwood. It will explain the DSI fault and sequence.

Suburban's electric switch and much more

Pulled this fuse right below the wire harness and the noise stopped.

Guess Iíll check to make sure itís not blown, but if it was- I wouldnít think the noise would have stopped when I pulled it.

I was just editing a pic of an atwood, to show the spark ignitor, which you just posted the other end of that goes to the control module. Is any of this wet?

Well, I donít think so but maybe. I flipped the valve at top to see if thatís where the noise was coming from.

I know I saw water at the bottom of the water heater, so itís possible.

Flipping the switch on the “gas” results in nothing happening outside. The squealing/high pitch noise goes away when that is turned off. (I probably should have had that off as I was muckingnwith fuses and the wiring harness.)

HI ependydad it sounds to me like the hot water heater control module has a bad capacitor that is making the whistling noise. I have had to replace a lot of control boards over the years in control systems that we're making the whistling sound. Water, old age, voltage spikes are not friendly to electronics.

If it has failed after it drys out replace it with a dinosaur brand control board. much better made than the ones that the manufacturer uses.

hope This Helps Tim

Thanks for that. I'd love to get the dino board but I'm going to have to put in something that I can find locally today.

I never seen where you said whether you have hot water on electric?

If so, I'm suspecting the control board has gone bad and simply flagged the DSI light on. The board really isn't in play when on electric. While 120v current 'may' run through it, (relay) all controls of water temperature are done via the mechanical/electric stat.

If you have hot water don't worry about the noise until the Dinosaur board arrives.
Even though you may not see water you might try drying the board with a hair drier.
Don't get it too hot.

No hot water on either gas or electric. Same symptoms- DSI fault light shows. Both gives the same high pitch noise at the control board outside when they're flipped on.

I have a new control board and thermostat from a local RV shop. Same board I can buy online for $110, I just spent $220 for (and that was his discounted "as low as I can go" price). But, you pay for convenience!

I'll try the hair dryer trick before changing the board.
