Winterization not done properly?

Hi all,

New 2017 Sunseeker 3050 owner here. This is also our first RV ever so I'm a n00b at a lot of this stuff.

We paid the RV dealership last fall to winterize for us because we needed them to fix a couple minor warranty issues anyway and just had them do it while it was there.

Im de-winterizing it now and it looks to me like the water heater was not bypassed.

My question is, what is the possible harm from this? Am I owed a partial refund here?

What should I do from this point to address any possible issue resulting from this?

The hot water tank WAS drained and the plug open. Theres definitely anti-freeze in the plumbing so there was nothing frozen.

Here is the condition I found when I opened the panel. To me this appears that its not bypassed

If the heater was drained your fine. While anti freeze is not optimal in the heater it is not the end of the world. Just flush real well to get out the taste. The antifreeze is non toxic so it will not hurt you, just tastes bad.

It'll be fine. As stated above, flush real good to remove the taste.

X2 and do not fire the WH up before flushing, the antifreeze will kinda cook onto the inside of the tank and will take longer to get the taste out.
Please don't ask me to explain how I know this. OOPs, there goes my mouth again.

You should be fine, if no leaks, just rinse well, no refund is due.

I would pull the drain plug on the heater and let it flush till clear. Keep faucets closed.

The photo you posted shows your HWT in normal "summer" use. To bypass this tank, the valve on the cross pipe between hot and cold must be open (level/sstraight) with pipe and the hot/cold valves on the vertical pipes to the tank must be closed. (perpendicular) To help me remember I drew this schematic on the inside of the front panel cover of my 3050.
Just drain/flush tank till you drain runs clear, then fire up the heater.

I don't worry about any taste as I don't drink hot water much. But as other suggested just flush it out good, at least the tank was protected from freezing.

What everyone said is true unless you have a Suburban water heater in which case you will probably need a new anode rod.

You are not alone. I made them fire up water system while we did the PDI and it had already been winterized since it was Feb. of course the hot water heater was not bypassed so have some extra flushing to do.

Figured on replacing the anode anyhow.

I have seen several dealers who winterize it correctly and when they are finished return the valves to the normal position. I bet this saves them 100 calls in the spring for no hot water.

If the lines haven't been previously blown out with air, there will be a "plug" of water remaining in the ball valves. Opening the valves allows that water to drain or expand without breaking the valves if freezing occurs.

Exactly. I even do it myself so I don't end up with a burnt out element.

X2 I do this also so I don't have to open up the cabinet again, I just hook up and flush

I like to leave the valves in the winterization position so i dont flush antifreeze through the water heater in the spring.

That tiny little bit still in the hose that runs from the outside of the camper to the shut off to water heater is only 2 ft on my camper or less I just leave the anode rod out when I turn on the water to flush any and all dirt or dry scale in the water tank flush till clean . Install the anode rod and flush the rest of the system

You should be fine. Can't see how anything would be harmed and I don't think you are owed anything from the dealer if there is no damage. Although a dealer's winterization technique did not do everything possible, my guess is that it worked and you have no winter damage to your RV. That's kind of what you paid for, no damage in spring.

Never have this dealer winterize your RV again. Learn to do it yourself and never trust anyone other than you to handle this chore. I know that the majority of member here winterize their RV way better than any dealer or campground owner would.

My wife (Liz) and I just picked up our new 2017 Sunseeker 3050S. I have a lot to learn! Thanks for the info. I will be checking this out as well. I am hoping to figure these things out over the summer so I can winterize myself this fall. I am going to de-winterize this weekend. I hope you guys love your Sunseeker. We do so far, 1 week. WE really like the floor plan of the 3050S.
