XLR 24HFS incorrect gray capacity?

I recently bought a 2015 XLR 24HFS. On our first real trip I noticed that the gray tank seemed to fill up a lot faster than I expected it to. After thinking about it some more, I decided to test the capacity with a marked 5 gallon bucket I have. I poured the buckets into the bathroom sink until they started to back up into the shower. I was only able to get slightly over 8 buckets of water into the tank before it started coming back into the shower and not re-draining.

8 buckets x 5 gallons is only 40 gallons. That's 17 gallons under the advertised capacity of 57 gallons. The trailer is leveled by the floor and the counter top (not sure where the best place to level it is...). Does this sound normal to anyone or is there a pretty good chance that my gray tank isn't what it is supposed to be???

Anyone? Waiting til the season is a little more over before bringing it to the dealer, but don't want to look like an idiot when I do if there is something I'm missing.

Seems like a good question for your dealer. That is almost 1/3 less than the advertised capacity. By chance did you check the black water tank capacity?

I could understand a few gallons plus or minus but not 17.

I didn't check the black water, but it seems to be ok. Even with pre-filling the tank with 2-3 bowl's full of water and a full extended weekend of use, it had just hit the 2/3 mark. So that seems to be accurate at the 35ish gallons (can't remember exact advertised capacity). The black is a little harder to test until I get the drain installed at my house.

The 2015 brochure says 57 gallons for the 24/27/29. I have a 2015 XLR29 that the manual says has 57 gallons. However it has two gray tanks according to the panel. I have four buttons to check levels, Fresh, black, gray, and a second gray. Perhaps 57 gallons is split between two tanks. One for the sinks and the other for the shower?

Do you have a galley tank ?? (Two tanks?) The 57 gallons would be all grey tanks. Grey & Galley combined not just the one grey tank.

Good catch guys, if OP has two tanks that could explain the difference.

First how many outside pull handles do you have for dumping. each tank needs a valve. my shower and bathroom sink are all in 1, being the water is coming up in the shower I would say that is yours to. Do you have a one for the galley also? 17 is pretty far off.

Of course there is also the possibility that the tank size was changed. This is from their brochure:

"Forest River, Inc. reserves the right to make changes in prices, colors, materials, equipment and specifications at anytime, without notice, and assumes no responsibility for any error in this literature."

That pretty much sums it up.

My 2015 XLR has that extra button on the panel, too, but I don't have a second gray tank. I'm guessing FR just bought a boat load of the same panels and used them in all the XLRs, even if that 5th button wasn't needed. So don't assume you have a second gray tank just because you have an extra gray tank indicator button...

yea, only one gray tank here, but I do have a button for a 2nd gray tank. From what I have seen, the only place for the 2nd gray tank is taken up by the fuel tank.

I have two dump handles for my gray tanks and one for my black on my XLS. The 57 is divided into two tanks. Go figure, its a mix and match tinker toy set. My guess is it takes two tanks to add to the 57 on the 24/27/29 and you have two gray dump valves when you do have both. I still have a spot for the fuel tank but my 29 is longer of course. The brocure says the 30 has a 32gal gray and a 54gal black (verses our 32), very different from the 24/27/29. Only Forest River really knows and they live in Oz and seem unreachable. Perhaps the extra 17 is my 2nd gray dump which you don't have?
