You don't need a surge protector... A 50 to 15 amp would be OK if your just trying to keep your batteries charged and run some lights otherwise the 15 amp cord would be too small to run anything else.

I assume you have a 50 amp cord with your RV? I would use your heavy cord and then reduce down at the end for the generator.

50 amp to 30 amp

A surge protector no matter the reason should always be used.

I don't own anything with 50 am service, so correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears as thought that is NOT the correct plug for a 50 amp RV connection. I see only 3 connections on the 50 amp side when I should see 4- I think.

Edit: On second look, that appears to be the twist lock type on which I have no knowledge, so maybe only 3 connectors???? Looks as though maybe there is a connection made on the outside ring??

Correct 50 amp is four prong not 3

50 amp
Line line neutral ground

30 amp
Line neutral ground

i have one of those types of pig tails....ordered it from home depot....its nice while trailer is in storage so i can hook up a smaller extension cord just to keep the batt charged up...although that one does not appear to be a rv 50 amp "marinco" plug...it will work, but you need the right 4prong plug end!

Actually the point is does he need a surge guard...... as I stated before a surge guard is recommended regardless of adapting up or down from 50-30 or 15 amp.

surge guard or not, that pigtail he posted and asked about will NOT work with his 50amp trailer.....although it would be amusing to watch him try and plug it in!! LOL....

however the one i posted will work.....and i agree....always use a surge device!

Lol I figure he must have been using a generalised pic and not the actual to get his point across.

I have one of these, but 30 amp. Use it to connect to generator. Don't see the need for surge guard when connecting to inverter generator, but I guess it could be prudent connecting to your 110v outlet at home. If you have whole home surge protection on your mains, then you wouldn't need a device on this cord.

The 50 amp plug on the trailer side only has three contacts on the other end it has four. That plug will work for the lighting the trailer and charging the battery. A surge protector is recommended but not required...

your probably right, but after seeing what people can, will, or will attempt to plug their trailer into lately, i thought it was best to keep everything clear! LOL

its a handy little pigtail for low amp usage.....and it sure beats the bean out of dragging out my 50ft 50amp cable just to keep the battery topped off while its parked in my storage or at the rental storage...

apologies and claifications

should have explained in more depth and detail, my apologies.

I am looking for a way to use my portable Honda 2000iu generator when I do not need my 5500 Onan generator when camping (NASCAR, INDY, Etc.). Just figured it a waste to run the big generator to run a few lights and a tv (gas, wear and tear, hours, etc.). It is a pain the arse to run an extension cord through a window or the door to run the tv, portable fan, lights, radio, etc. The picture is from Amazon, so it might be a generic picture, but here is the link for two different sales:

Amazon.com: Conntek 14422 RV Pigtail Adapter 15 Amp Male Plug With Screw To 50 Amp 125/250 Volt Locking Female Connector: Patio, Lawn & Garden

Amazon.com: Conntek 14222 RV 1.5-Foot Pigtail Adapter Power Cord 15 Amp Male Plug To 50 Amp 125/250 Volt Locking Female Connector: Patio, Lawn & Garden

so, with this clarification (hopefully) would this being plugged into said Honda generator power the lights and/or tv when plugged into the screw in 50Amp connector? If so, what surge protector do I use? I have the 50Amp Surge Guard for plugging into campgrounds shore power poles, but it won't work with this.

I do have the regular 50Amp cord that plugs into the shore power pole and screws into my trailer, that won't plug into this either and I doubt that it would carry the power from the Honda generator anyway (could be wrong, but I am no electrician).

side note, I try and get all the information and research before doing anything, that is why I invested in and used at every stop the Surge Guard (hefty price by the way) on my vacation this past summer. appreciate the help for those who did help and would appreciate clarifying questions before the condescending tone starts. Not saying that was the intent, but how it is read can be taken wrong by others, so if that was not the intent, all is good. There are all levels of experience on this site and just trying to gain more from those who have it. Have a good day.

If your using that pigtail to just run some lights, TV and charge the batteries with your Honda 2000 you will be fine. You don't need a surge protector. To be safe you can throw the breaker for the AC and Microwave so no accidents happen. If you decide to use that pigtail I would get a heavy duty 12/3 extention cord at some place like Home Depot
25 ft. 12/3 Extension Cord-AW62630 at The Home Depot

again, that first link shows a 3 prong female end...that wont work...you need the 4 prong rv 50amp two hot legs, a ground and a neutral....all the pigtail does is power ONE leg of the rv power.....

with the correct cord, yes it will power all your basic low amp functions with the genny...although i notice on my trailer, that some outlets are powered by the second leg and do not work with the adapter.....

as far as the surge, you can either use a bunch of adapters to make your plug in 50 work (not ideal) you would have to go 15 to 50 female from teh genny to surge then 50 to 15 male, then use the 15 to 50 female piggy...if its an inverter genny i would just plug straight in.....although my surge is hardwired to trailer.....

hope that helps...the only cord i KNOW is correct is the one from home depot i posted in a previous post above.....because i have and use that one.....and for what its worth its a lot cheaper to boot than the ones you posted....

good luck sir!

I can see why you might think that. BUT, the female plug on my 50 amp connection only has three lugs. I think that is because the ground is buiit into the housing of the recepticle. I have a similar pig tail as OP but a 50 to 30 amp. I also reduce the 30 amp down to 15 when I plug into my 2000 Honda.

Here are some pics.

I believe you are right the ground is bonded to the neutral within the plug.
