2-6V to 4-6V batteries

I currently have 2 interstate 6v batteries that are 2 years old. I want to upgrade to 4-6V batteries. The hydrometer readings on my current batteries show healthy. Am I o.k. to just buy 2 more of the same batteries(I don't want to toss 2 good batteries) or will doing this just ruin all 4 quickly?

Whenever batteries are in parallel, any voltage differential for any reason will result in the higher voltage batteries discharging into the lower voltage batteries. The smaller the differential the less this happens.

How significant this difference will be in your particular case is hard to predict. If one battery bank won't charge beyond 12.55 volts, then the other battery bank will also be limited to 12.55 volts.

Reality is if the hydrometer shows the same across all cells in all batteries, you should be good to go. If there are differences between cells, you are likely to have problems.

if I'm good to go, Then should I hook the 2 older batteries together and the 2 new OR 1 new to 1 old on each side?
Thanks for you time

Run a new and old in series with each other and you should equalize the voltage between the two pairs so long as both old and both new batteries have the same voltage.

X2. One old, one new in each parallel bank. If the old match each other, and the new match each other, you have matched sets.
