30 AMP power question
While at home I have our camper plugged in using a normal extension cord with a pigtail adapter for charging. I would like to have 30 AMP power and was told all I would have to do is change the 15 AMP breaker to 30 AMP in my panel and still use the extension cord. I've never heard or seen this and I'm not an electrician, so will this work?

If you did that you would only get what the wiring would allow until it overheats and catches on fire, if your panel is large enough you could have it wired to deliver the 30 amps needed but it means running 10 gauge wiring from the panel to your new outlet and you would not be using an extension cord just the trailers umbilical cord. I thought about doing it but for the amount of times we have needed air con it just did not make financial sense for us.

Cost me 100 bucks to have a local electrician runs dedicated 30a service to the side of the garage where the RV is stored.
Keeps the battery fesh in summer, lets us "driveway camp" with all the amenities when we have major work done on the house (which has happened far too many times in this craphole province!)
You need a dedicated run. The 15a service is only wired for 15a (likely 14/2 in a residential application). 30a needs a 10/3 run.

If you do decide to install a dedicated 30 amp outlet, here is a good little pdf file that you can print out to make sure the electrician (or other) does it correct...including wiring sizes for length of run:

It was just a friend. I knew the guys on here had the knowledge to say whether its correct or not. Just glad I asked. I printed out the info from the above site and will be giving it to the electrician.

All of the responses are just further examples of the value of following this forum! Like others, I had a dedicated 30 amp installed. I converted my barn to storing the 'toys', so had the electrician bring in the service. I know the cost will vary widely by area, etc., but my install cost around a hundred bucks for his work. I added the breaker box myself (now set up with one 30 amp breaker and two 20 amp, and several available for expansion), ran the proper gauge wire, and added high intensity lights. My total bill was right around $175, and worth every penny of it. I had him verify that all my work was to code . . . he's the electrician, and I saved bucks by installing the simple things.

I used the .pdf as a reference when I was getting a quote from a local electrician. It was very helpful for both me and the electrician. Since my gangbox was on the other side of the house, my quote was pretty outrageous ($1250). For me to do it myself it would've been fairly expensive; the materials at Home Depot would've been about $350. I think I'll live with this 100' extension cord for a good long time.
Of course I'm not running the A/C on that cord.
