50 amp install at home

Need to install a 50 A plug at home. Likely need to run underground.
Any advice, etc.

Just installed a 30A outlet here last week... Thankfully, my panel's in my garage, so was an easy job. Plus, I'm an electrician, so that helped...

Short answer is - if you have to ask how to do it, probably should hire the job out...

Without knowing a lot more (distance, panel size and ampacity, physical layout and route) - can't really offer much advice.

If it's any kind of distance, I'd run a 15 or 20A circuit alongside the 50A, and mount it on the post or wherever you're thinking of putting the 50... it'll come in handy as a convenience outlet for tools, battery charger, vacuum, etc.

Use the proper cable, and account for voltage drop, at a minimum, you'll need #8, and if it's any distance, don't be surprised if you have to go to #6 or #4...

I don't know the codes or enforcement where you are, so don't know if an inspection and permit are required or not - but a qualified local sparky will.

50 amp plugs are wired for 220V. 120V on each leg = 220 across the 2 legs.

You would need to find out if your panel and feed to the house can handle another 100A load (50 A per leg). This really is a job for a professional.

Not to get nit-picky; but it's a 50A load at 120/240 - not 100A...

I agree fully with bringing in a local, licensed pro!

Oh, no......... here we go again!
I wouldn't be surprised if this discussion bled over into what percent nitrogen exists in normal air.
