50 AMP Power Cord

New trailer we purchased comes with 50 amp service and power cord, the campground we have our site at only has a 30 amp power pole. Will we be able to plug in without an adapter? We are not concerned about power draw as 30 amp is adequate for us, only is the 50 amp male end the same as the 30 so we can plug in without an adapter. Trailer is still at dealer and we cannot get to it till Spring. Thanks for help.

You will have to buy (or possibly the dealer will include it) an adaptor to go from 50 amp to 30 amp. You can't plug the 50 amp end into the 30 amp plug. 30 amp has 3 prongs and 50 amp has 4.

No, you have to have an adapter. Usually about $15 or less.

You should be able to find the adapter at most RV places, and sometimes at Wal-mart in their RV section (if ya have them in Canada).

What they call a dog-bone adapter (cause it resembles a dog bone) will look like this:

You just want to make sure you get a 50 amp female to 30 amp male.

They also make a reverse adapter that will let you plug a 30 amp into a 50 amp power supply. It will have a 30 amp female and a 50 amp male. You want to make sure you get the correct one.

I prefer the dog-bone, as you can shut the door on the campground power pedestal when using it. If you use the second type, it sticks out so much, you usually can't close the cover......and put's the weight of the 50 amp cord onto the end of the adapter, which can sometimes pull on the plug not letting it get as good a connection......especially on older pedestals where the 30 amp outlet is a little worn

Here is something else to consider...

Our unit came wired for 50Amp service, but like you, we don't expect to ever need more than 30 Amp.(single AC unit; no washer/dryer, etc). Most of the CG's we go would require an adpater and I also didn't like the idea of schelping that 50 amp shore power cable around. (have you seen the size of that thing?)...so...

We decided to buy this:

It cost more than an adapter, but now I just hook up to the std 30 amp connection at the post and can connect to the 50Amp wall plug on the trailer. It is also a lot easier to store and set up.. And I can use my 30 amp extenstion cords from previous campers.

btw I do carry a 50 amp to 30 amp adapter just in case we wind of somewhere with only 50 Amp service
