Question 5th wheel venture landing gear

Cardinal landing gear doesn't retract. Makes loud noise as though gears are stripped.

It is a Venture Mfg gear box.

While it could be stripped gear(s), it also could be that the roll pin in the shaft has stripped. Look at the (motor side) gearbox drive shaft and see if it's turning on both sides of the gearbox. If it isn't then it's most likely the roll pin. Those aren't too hard to replace and are a lot less than a new gear box.

Start with the shear pin idea. If that is not your problem, come back and give us a follow up. I have had the non powered leg fail. After some research I purchased directly from Venture Mfg a dual motor setup, added up limit switxhes and heavy duty reversing relays. The biggest problem with electric landing gear is people running them up until the clutch slips. This causes lots of problems down the road.

Thank you guys for responding. I will check the roll pin. Some additional info: It extends OK but will not retract. Do I have to get the jacks off the ground to relieve the load before any work on it?

They are also timed...both legs need to be at same height before inserting roll pin or bolt

That throws a kink in the works if it extends under load. If that's the case, it's most likely not the roll (shear) pin. Check it to make sure, but it'll surprise me if that's it.

Will it not retract at all or at any position?
