A/C runs fine plugged in, trips generator?

Our 2010 21DFWP toy hauler has a 13,500 Dometic A/C unit. It runs fine when plugged into an outlet, but when hooked up to a 3500 watt generator, it overloads the generator. Is there any maintenance I can do besides clean the filters and blowing out the coils? Any idea what would be wrong?

Thanks!
JM

What else are you running with the AC 3500 watts in my opinion is marginal at best running the AC with any other appliances..... Some will probably disagree........

Converter may be drawing up to 8 amps.
If water heater is on electric its pulling 9- 13amps.
Fridge is pulling 5-8 amps on electric.
13.5 a/c draws 12-16 amps running and many more to start up.

Not to hard to do the math here.

3500 watt gennie is at best 29 amps.

Just out of curiosity is the outlet on the gennie a 120/240 volt outlet?
Is it 4 prong?

Thanks for the replies. I'm not running anything else, not even a light, just troubleshooting the A/C and it still trips. Using a three prong, 30 amp outlet from generator. Have been reading about the hard start mods to the A/C and wondering if that wouldn't resolve my problems.

The fan delay mod I came up with may help you tremendously.
Hard start capacitor may help to.

Btw is 3500 watts surge watts or running watts?

For my Honda 3000 watt gen to run my A/C,I have to turn off the economy mode, set the A/C fan on manual low and of course the thermostat set to cool.If you let the fan cycle with the A/C compressor it draws too much on the start up spike. With the fan set on manual low there is less of a spike for the generator to over come.(my Honda is an EU3000IS)I also use the 23.3 amp outlet with an adapter to the 30 amp rv plug.

My Champion 3500 runs my A/C, refrigerator, converter all at the same time. We just do not run the micro wave with the A/C on and powered off the Generator.
I'd start my troubleshooting your problem by picking up a handheld clamp on amp meter.
