I keep my two 12V batteries charged up all winter and keep them wired in parallel. I was disconnecting the cables and accidentally dropped the negative cable onto the postive cable causing a short circuit. It was probably only a second or two. Was that enough to do permanent damage? They still fully charge on the charger.
At most you could have blown a fuse somewhere. I doubt there was any serious harm done to the batteries.

Other than a good scare, you most likely did not permanent harm.
I did see the result of someone dropping a wrench across the battery terminals.
It welded the wrench to the lead posts. What a mess
While I did not have a camera, these will give you some idea of what could have happened.
