Bad Battery?

We have a V lite travel trailer. Trailer jack and slides will only work on shore power. Even when power cord hooked to truck (slides, jacks) do not work until shore power connected. Could this be bad battery (5yrs old)?

It could be. Take the battery to an auto parts store and have them test it. They usually do it for free. You should also check your battery disconnect, reverse polarity fuses (30 or 40amp) and the resetable fuse on the tongue or frame near the battery. Usually the tongue jack and slides are connected directly to the battery side of the resetable fuse but yours could wired be different.

If battery is bad it will drag down the aux line from the TV. 5 yrs is about the best you can expect from the batteries delivered with most RVs.

Agree with others that you should have that battery tested. Last deep cycle battery I had only lasted 3 yrs.

If it doesn't work when connected to the TV I would check to ensure you have power at the connector on your TV. Some vehicles only power the socket when the vehicle is running. If no voltage, check your fuses.

You should be able to work that jack if it's connected to the tow vehicle (and you have power from the TV).

Have them test the cells, with a hydrometer.

Lead acid Batteries last months to ten years. Depends on the operator.

They should never be drained below 12.0 volts. If you do it damages them. Do it repeatedly and they hold less of a charge every time. Eventually zero.

Auto places check for free. Their goal was is to sell you a battery. However, you want the biggest most powerful true deep cycle battery you can afford. Simply more amps. Not a marine battery. I like the Costco 6 volt gc2 batteries for $93. However you need room for two. These are more abuse friendly and hold a lot of amps.

You can test them easily with a hydrometer. The tool is $10 at the auto store.

It s a good plan to have a voltmeter installed somewhere in the rv to keep an eye on the voltage. Amazon has a Bluetooth, voltmeter for less than $40. Others with shunts are really nice however they are much more expensive and are more difficult to install.

As said I am a little surprised that when plugged into the tv and the motor running you cannot move the slides. That indicates a blown fuse or other issue.

Exactly - Don't make the mistake of buying a regular battery from an Auto Parts store... Get a true deep cycle battery.

We had a battery that only lasted about 3 years. Took it to a battery shop and they found a shorted cell. What is the battery voltage (disconnected)? It's not impossible you have a bad connection too. If you have a WFCO converter, that could potentially be the problem. What is the voltage is it putting out?

Bad Battery?

My battery is voltage is currently 12.62 volts so I feel like converter is working. Have not as yet had battery checked. Battery disconnect was 1st thing I checked.

If the converter is running and connected to a fully charged battery it should read more like 13.25 volts which is the normal Float Voltage for most Converters. Check converter with battery disconnected (cable off preferably) and I believe it should read 13.6 volts or more.

You need more than 13 volts to charge and or maintain a battery.

Thanks for the info. Sounds like my battery is weak. Will check converter output and see what I get. Thank you
