From one of the batteries positive terminal to the next battery connected in series to it negative terminal would give you 12 volts. You can check this with a volt meter.

Chances are they're wired series/parallel to provide 36 volts.
You can tap into one pair to get 12 volts... Use a volt meter to be sure

I've not seen 6v golf cart batteries wired this way in a golf cart.
rsdata's drawing simply shows 3 separate banks of 6v batteries with each bank providing 12v.
The banks are not connected to provide your typical 36v golf cart voltage.

I think this drawing to be more common among golf carts...

Substitute the 12v light connection for your 12v inverter connection.

QUESTION

depending on the wattage of the lights and the efficiency of the inverter, would not the pair of batteries connected to the additional 12V load be drawn down quickly enough that you might compromise the 36 V motor load? and what about the recharge cycle? would those two cells get enough charge current to recharge sufficiently, or would there be something that prevents that?

I figured that wiring the batteries with wires as I diagrammed would load the batteries equally... My golf cart is gas powered... I was not aware that battery powered carts ran on 36 VOLTS...
