Battery problems
Hey folks,
I need some help. I replaced 2-type 24 batteries with 2-type 27 marine/rv batteries. With these new type 27 batteries, I blew my refridgerator fuse (15 amp) and several light bulbs blew when left on too long. Am i not able to switch from type 24 to type 27 batteries or do i need specifically type 27 RV batteries?
I have a 2006 Forest River 27 foot bunkhouse model.

Battery voltage is independent of battery size.

Verify the voltage within the trailer. Is the voltage correct? Are you hooked up to shore power when the fuses blow?

Is it possible you connected these incorrectly? 12 volt batteries connected in parallel are positive to positive, negative to negative.

Yes - it does sound like maybe a connection issue. One other thing to check - make sure the positive and negative wires from the trailer aren't reversed. Different manufacturers have different systems, but on our old camper the positive wire was black, which is the opposite of typical house wiring. Reversing those will blow fuses.
Not admitting how I know that!

rbneron and triguy,
thanks for the info. To rbneron, I was only hooked up to battery. To triguy, from your response, i hooked my batteries up wrong. i had the batteries hooked up in series with main line going to pos, the connector going from the neg to pos, and then the other main line going to neg.

If the batteries are hooked up incorrectly you could be putting 24 volts into your TT system and this can do a lot of damage, double check as Triguy stated above. Unhook the battery until you are sure it is connected properly again as Triguy stated.

I see you found it and answered as I was typing my last comments. Now you need to test all your components and appliances in the TT. That 24 volts could have fried some circuit boards, let's hope not.

thanks everyone. I have disconnected the batteries until I can figure out that I have them hooked right. fortunately, only need to replace a fuse and about 5 light bulbs.
time to winterize here in Central Oregon. Just got back from hunting and had freezing rain and snow already.

so what i'm seeing and reading, I need to hook the pos on one battery to the pos on the 2nd battery and the neg on one battery to the neg on the 2nd battery and then hook pos from the trailer to one battery and the neg from the trailer to the other battery?
Does this sound correct? Thanks everyone for contributing info.

Thanks everyone for the help. Fortunately, no major damage-just had to replace a $1 fuse and buy a second cable so I could attach the batteries correctly.

That will do it. 24 volts to the camper will fry any 12 volt item (fridge, furnace, lights, converter, some airconditioners, MicroMonitor tank sensor display, etc).
You may have done more damage than you know.

If you had plugged into shore power, could have been worse. As shared, you may have damaged more than the lights. Hopefully fridge was not operating off the battery. I trust you learned from this; could have been much worse.
