Battery Question:

Marine/Deep Cycle Battery
w/posts & wing nuts

When I test at the wing-nut connections battery tests 40%,
When I test at the post connections battery tests 100%.

I cleaned connections and same results.

Any ideas as to why, when the connections appear to be
inter-connected from the outside of battery?

Thank You

Are you using alligator clips on the tester? If so, it could be a bad connection between the clip(s) and the wing nut. A wing nut doesn't give you much contact area when using alligator clips.

I used the heavy duty clamps that are on my testers. I checked a new battery at store with results of 70/100. I purchased post converters to take a conventional post to a wing nut post same results: 40/100. I am thinking of trying the cable to a post clamp to experiment....

I have had campers for 14 years and never realized there was that much difference between connections of the post types. I always used the wing nut connections.

Unless there a bad "marriage" where the post is connected internally. Been chasing some electrical gremlins myself and came back to connections that still work but had seperated and was arcing to operate

Are you checking on the stud or the base where the ring terminal would make contact with the lead? Never seen a difference before but the ring terminal will be "getting" it's power from the lead not the stud. Successive rings will get their power from the ring it sits on top of. That's actually one reason it's important to always place the largest current draw on the bottom and work your way up from there.

I contacted two battery manufactures today. One said it is attached at two different spots internally and this is normal. The other said the wing nut stud is only a attach point and the connection only takes place between the ring terminal and the lead base. This makes sense...

I think the first response was from a new guy. The second makes the most sense. Especially if you see the lead "path" from the lug to the stud. I personally only know of one type of battery that has two positive posts connected to separate places internally. These are race batteries that have a separate terminal for 16 volts to run the starter in high compression engines.

Learn something new everyday. Camping 14 years had my share of batteries. Never knew the threaded stud was such a poor conductor.

Still awaiting to get my solar panel installed on roof. The stand-offs I purchased did not raise it enough. Fabrication Time

Most "12 volt" electrical devices can run perfectly normal with up to 10% voltage drop. So that difference is acceptable by most. I personally don't like it but what can you do.
