Connecting positive first is safer. If you touch your wrench to something while tightening the positive but don't have the negative connected, nothing happens. If the negative is connected and you bridge the positive to something you get a huge spark. Touching negative to something with positive already connected does nothing since you are only connecting negative to ground.
