Cleaning the 7-way power cable connector

I went to check on my winter-stored trailer, and I found that at some point the power cable end fell onto the ground. The 7-way connector is now pretty much full of mud and grit. Can anyone give me some advice on the best way to clean the contacts? Would spraying a load of WD40 in there help? It's stored at a remote site with no power or water, and I'd quite like to have the electrics working when I tow it out.
Thanks,
John

I suggest this, WD makes a contact cleaner as well.

Thanks

Thanks for the recommendation - I can even get it at my local Walmart.
Cheers,
John

Old toothbrush and some water and dish soap to get the crap out of it. Then use some electronics cleaner. Then some dielectric grease on each terminal to keep them from corroding again in the future.

You might also pick up a can of compressed air and some of those weird plastic toothpicks with the little "brush" on the end to clean out down in there.

A simple paper clip or small solid wire formed with a small L on the end will also clean the mud out and then squirt with WD40.

Once you get it cleaned out go down to Walmart and pick up a 7 pin truck connector and slide your trailer plug into it. Will no longer matter if it is laying on the ground. Got mine for 7 bucks and have had a clean plug ever since.

Suggest you get a big hose clamp and clamp it to the tongue jack facing up and just plug the end into it when you unhook from the tow vehicle. With it facing up and the female facing down, rain water will not bother it either.

Thanks to everyone

Some really good suggestions here. Thanks so much. I'd rather not have to store the trailer at all, but until retirement it'll be off the road quite a bit. It's nice to know that with those PM suggestions this is one thing I shouldn't have to worry about in the future.

AFTER you physically clean the prongs, apply "DeOxIt" to the prongs. DeOxIt neutralizes the chemical corrosion giving you better electrical contact. I use the red liquid that has its' own applicator brush.

After cleaning it use electronics cleaner. Have used battery terminal cleaner to remove corision if it is there. Used Wd-40, got a ground issue with it, used electronics afterwards and ground issue went away. Apparently the center pin and another made through contact through the WD-40, not sure. Use female dummy plug as well as I store outside.

X2 on the deoxIT. Amazing stuff, can be used on connectors and jacks you don't think about like USB, HDMI, component video, etc.

Could you give me the detail of the precise product you use? I just called the distributor here, and he needs more detail. DeoxIT comes in incredible number of types and containers.

Thanks

Yes Sir, I use their red version, the D100 on electronics. I keep a small bottle with a needle applicator in my trailer's electrical tool kit. Pricey stuff but works like nothing else.

All but WD

I stay away from the WD-40 mainly because it will pick up dust and dirt over time. The contact cleaner mentioned earlier is the best thing to use. My 2
Cents! 😊

I up a terminal cleaning kit from Snap On tools that has special blades that you can push in n out of the socket to clean those flat style terminals with.
