Connecting power with a 4-prong plug NEMA 14-30P

While staying at the inlaws for the holidays, I noticed they have a 4-prong plug NEMA 14-30P for a portable generator in the garage. I checked it out and it has a 30amp breaker in the panel that provides power.

I decided I would make up an adaptor that would allow me to connect my 50amp RV cord to the plug and make it possible to run more features inside the RV (AC/Heat Strips, TV's)

I picked up a Power Grip 50-Amp Replacement Female Receptacle,

and a GE Dryer Cord
,
cut it to about 9" and attached the power grip to the other end.

Plugged in the GE end into the outlet, plugged in the progressive Surge Guard to make sure the wiring in the wall was good, and plugged the RV cord into Surge Guard.

BOOM! AC in Arkansas in December. Who would have ever thought it would be 80 Degrees the week of Christmas in AR!!

Have a similar adapter, been tapping into dryer outlet when we visit relatives for several years. Also use a splitter and get free cable.

Me too. Saying Boom when talking about electricity (and bombs) is usually not a good sign as to what is going on.

Yes, people do use them as a good geni hookup for a power failure.. They need to use a cord known as a "suicide cord" since it has two males. They are widely debated but works.

Do you mean that I could supply house power in case of failure with 2x 50amp males ??? I thought there was a cut off ?? or do I need to install wire and female 50 amp directly on generator if i want to supply house in case of failure ??

Not quite sure what you mean by installing a female hookup on a geni but some already have a 30amp twist lock plug.

I do not agree with doing it but google a suicide cord or back feeding and you can make your own decision how to precede. Not safe IMO but we are all adults. But short answer is using a 30amp twist lock on the geni you can back feed a dryer outlet (well honestly any outlet but expect to burn the house down) to power a home (well half if only using a 15 or 20amp outlet). But do not do that or you will burn down your home.

my onan 5.5 do not supply power to the power cord that connects to shore power when running and if i need power to house that is already equipped within the electrical house panel with a breaker in case i want to hook a generator. So if i want the rv onan to supply the power i need to wire directly on the generator? So if i do that i would need to install a female connection on generator and use a suicide cord ? Right?

There's no debate - they are an absolute code violation, and a safety hazard...

Oh, I agree... But like the last thread on this some months ago... People will do stupid things regardless of the rules (case in point weight police threads). I have a home generator that I wired to a transfer switch this is the correct, not as cheap method, but my home is safe and will not burn to the ground...

I was actually surprised my home was built with a switch between the heater and the breaker box. An outlet was then between the switch and the furnace so a suicide cord could be used to power the furnace in an outage. I was shocked that was even allowed to be put there.

Pierre, My recommendations... Do it right. If you need to ask on here it is probably outside your scope. I ran extension cords until I could pay to purchase the right parts to hook a transfer switch in.

Ask an electrician to see how and IF it can be done safely. Half assing it might get you hurt or killed!

Suicide cords are illegal in every state in the US and pose a significant danger to the user and power company employees. If there is an accident as the result of use of a suicide cord, you could be held liable. It is strongly recommended that you do not use them.

Please do not promote them on this forum.

Please, please, please do not do this. You can kill someone, or multiple people.

Moderators, please put this thread out of its misery!
